Which markers did you buy?
I think markers are a wonderful medium for these type of sketches ;)

I bought markers from "Too", a japanese brand. I ordered them online through "danafix". I am waiting for the rest of the set right now. I started with Neutral gray 1,3,5,7 and 9 just to try. It is a great medium to work with, especially on vehicles etc.

The first figure in your last post is marvelous!

The simplified forms and strong shadows really make it special.
Good lighting, figure fits in the environment really well!

More please! :D

Hi Wes, thanks!

Hi Johan, thanks; it was actually an exercise about composition: we had to cut out an interesting part of the whole. But i agree: it works best when the whole model is in the picture.

I have been drawing some more cars lately, some from ref pics, other sketches and some from imagination...

anyway, keep them coming!

batte812
04-03-2009, 11:08 AM
Hi Shapemaster, thans! I mostly use a ballpoint pen to draw cars: you don't need to sharpen it, and it doens't smear as oppsoed to pencil. I use these grey markers to render and sometimes a pencil (a lead pencil or prismacolor pencil) to accentuate the linework. If you're serious about drawing cars you should see the videos of Scot Robertson ("Basic perspective foundation" and "Drawing Cars"): they are really great. Good luck!

Good work! I think the faces could be treated in the same 3d manner: try to draw the heads as 3d forms. I'm sure you will find lots of tutorials on this topic. Don't let yourself be captivated by facial features in the first place.

Heozart
06-02-2009, 04:49 AM
Great sketches! I think your vehicles are getting better and better. :)

I checked out where they sell Scott Robertson DVDs, and they were a bit more expensive than I expected. Which ones do you have? Can I skip the first DVD and get the second one if I have basic knowledge of perspective, or is the first one more essential than the second?

NR43
06-02-2009, 03:29 PM
He's a pretty interesting guy, isn't he? (Borremans)
You saw that docu on him on Canvas a couple of weeks ago I suppose?
There is also an interesting book on his work. Our teach had it with him in class last week... quite inspiring indeed!

batte812
06-02-2009, 03:32 PM
Hi Heozart, thanks!
As for the DVD's: the first one really is essential basic perspective form drawing. It covers basic perspective techniques, drawing ellipses and mirroring curves in perspective. He demonstrates some very interesting exercises. So this one is really essential. "How to draw cars" is the secon most interesting. You need all the skills from cd 1. There is also a dvd on hovercrafts and one on airplanes. They are not so interesting, allthough the approach is a bit different from drawing cars: he uses more crossections from front to back to define the form.
So i think you'll have plenty of material with te 2 first dvd's. And it takes a lot of practice befor you get some results! Good luck!

Oops! I forgot to adress a few comments. Sorry.

Mister3D tahnks! I was not so happy with the faces myself. I have done better work in some sketches, but when i had to draw them in the scene in right proportions with the rest, it was much more difficult to get a good result.

Hi Johan, yes i saw the program on Borremans. Our teacher also brought that book to the class. That was the occasion for me to improvize on his work a bit.

I like the concept for those cars and ships, also the sketch of people seems very natural. Are you worked Enamel Paper 'glossy coated paper' with Felt pens? is very great these technics to work with.

batte812
06-15-2009, 06:58 PM
Hi Stridiggio, thanks. I just worked on printing paper with ballpoint pen, color pencils and markers. I have some Letraset marker paper lying around here somewhere, but i haven't used it yet. I should try it: it doesn't soak up the ink of the markers that much. And you can easily make a clean overlay of the original sketch. I will use it when my designs are getting better.

Hey Bart, what brand/type of blue pencils are you using?
Did you order them online?
I'm having a bit of a hard time finding them in bulk around where I live.

Love the last car sketch.
You could combine one of your car sketches with a figure or a robot design and work it out as a painting...

Would love to see some finished paintings from you. :)

Menthol: thanks! More robots coming up later...
Aviva: thanks a lot. It's quite a challenge to keep the curves fluent when there's a lot of construction involved.
Johan: i use "caran d'ache prismalo" color 159. They are aquarel pencils apparently. I mainly use them because they are quite hard, so they stay sharp for some time. I buy them at a local art store, and they are not cheap (1,30 €).

I like the direction your going in with those horses and cows done from life... Maybe also take that same direction with people ...From MOVEING LIFE..Will strengthen the old memory muscle,... and with that great linework of yours, will probably produce some great studies.

Hi Longhi, the poses were actually from ref pics. I don't have that much occasion to draw from life. Thanks for the comment.
Hi Glen, thanks! I have the feeling that it brings me to the basics of drawing: observing and throwing it on the paper, and of course studying structure and anatomy. I have some lessons with model coming up next weeks, so looking forward to that!

Here is a little project at school: it was about objects under water. I started with an apple that I sliced and put on sticks. I did a few aquarelles and some attempts with bistre. Later the apple turned into a submarine and I added some more elements from imagination. Hope you like...

Bart, for some reason I can´t see the #302-post images (maybe its only me)

nice school-experiment :)
and - love your animal sketches!
very dynamic and nicely clean at the same time ..

about your latest life drawings - I noticed that you are using (almost) the same strong (a bit too hard I think) outlining of your model - maybe if you only used that kind of strong outlining in some areas - mainly in the center of interest (head, main dynamic gesture line or whatsoever .. ) perhaps it might help a bit to add more variety to your drawing expression,
like in those sweet horse studies, perhaps ..
just a thought :)
keep it up,
a.

Hi Alenah, thanks for your reply. I fixed those broken references.
You're right about the linework (or the lack of it) in my life drawing. It doesn't have the same loosenes as in the animal drawings. I guess I tried to overdo it. The model is one of the students in our class, so I focused too much on the likens I suppose. It's part of the learning process and there are some more model sessions coming up, so I'll try to redeem myself!

Hey thanks for commenting my SB, loving the sketchy character studies in both human and robot form.

Got a quick questions since I have done one of the the things I plan on doing. You did scots rendering surfice dvd in painter :) What brushes did you decide on using to emulate what he was doing?

I realise its not really that important what brushes to use but it takes a bit of the guesswork out :)

It would be cool to see you tackle doing one of the female pose studies done in context in a finnished piece with a bit of story. 1 big piece in context rathen than a quick study. Its advice I have read alot.

Hi Whirlwind, thanks for the comment! I don't remember the exact brushes I used, but I probably used some pastel brush for the setup and the basic shading. I used a blender to smooth things out. I use a conté brush that I turned into a blender. Here are the settings I use currently:
Opacity 85
Grain 95
Resat 0
Bleed 85
Jitter 0,1
I should make more finished work; I guess I just like to keep on sketching...

Kris: thanks!

Johan: thanks! I have had a lot of time to practice the last months, since I don't have to go to work anymore. It's good and bad news at the same time; I just try to make the best of it. But it's not easy to find another job these days...

Here are some more car drawins mostly. I'm practicing my freehand perspective drawing. I did some shading experiments in PS (still lots to learn!) and a bit of figure drawing. All from ref pic or from imagination (landscape in the first rendering is a modified picture).

Think the first one would look better without the BG, the focus and perspective looks wrong maybe the horizon line?

The thumbnail cars rock!!!

Might be wrong as I am no expert but the front wheel on the last two cars look kind of warped. Maybe missing a perspective construction step.

agree with Whirlwind on the perpective issues but the quick life sketches and cars are great, some good imagination...

Whirlwind: thanks for the reply! The first one was just a loose experiment on how to make cars look reflective. I put in the environment to make it look more natural. But it doesn't look too well... And the wheels on the last ones are really off. I should practice my ellipses some more I guess.
Kris: thanks for the reply.

I corrected my construction in the last car and I took it into PS to do some more rendering experiments. I based the colors on a picture of an actual car.

Hi Johan thanks. The likeness in the SP isn't that striking though. I allways have difficulties to achieve any likeness in portraits, and SP's seem even more difficult... But I'll keep trying.
Here are some more exercises on linework. All done freehand with a ballpoint.

Hi Vladion, thanks! I'm focusing on linework now so it seems, and when you're used to drawing on paper the tablet feels so clumsy... But I am boing to color in some of the cars I drew later.

Hi Vikramvr, thanks! Here are some more; done with ballpoint pen and a bit of markers. Mostly freehand allthough I cleaned up the ellipses with the templates...

Wow, you are doing great! Love those figures, and I am really impressed by those quick portraits. Amazing lines and very expressive. Your vehicles are getting better and better too. One thing I noticed is that on some of them, the elipse for the front wheel is tilted a little too far. I love the cow thrown in the mix with all the vehicle designs, lol. Looking forward to seeing your next update.

Hi Johan, are you going to switch to painting?
I am entering the contest with three drawings. These are the concept studies. I need to work them out to finished pieces.
It would be great to get some opinions and advice on these works. I have made a few sketches and combined a few things. Let me know what you think of it!

Are you planning to make fully rendered drawings or...?

I'm indeed thinking about switching to oil painting class next year. I was advised to do so by my drawing teacher. He said I can always come back and do the 5th and last year of my drawing course after a couple years of painting. That will allow me to get back into figures more easily, because the first 2 years of painting class are still lives. (Focus is on technique, value and color usage)

batte812
01-15-2010, 06:19 PM
Hi Johan, thanks for the reply.
That's an interesting take on painting. I realise by now it takes years to achieve some level in drawing and painting anyway, so it might be more interesting to learn these alongside. So after 10 years or so you will have mastered them both. Good luck!
About the drawings: they are meant to be somewhat surreel. I don't know if you know the work of Michael Borremans? It should be something along that line. The other angle is that it should look like a product presentation. Hence the arrows and the round and rectangular planes. And the dominant feeling should be funny. But I probably have a weird sence of humour.
I forgot to mention the titles:
- Cat and dog
- The wilde farmer's daughter
- Back to school
I want to focus more on the linework and only render certain parts more in detail. I'm not sure if I want to use graphite pencil, blue pendil or ink. Maybe I'll work on colored paper and use some white gouache. It seems like I still have a lot of work.

NR43
01-15-2010, 06:35 PM
LOL I really had to laugh when reading "The Wilde Farmer's Daughter" :D
That's my favourite of the 3.

Borremans is amazing, btw.
My teach has a book on him in his locker in class.
He's a real artist that really lives for his art and nothing else.

batte812
02-06-2010, 01:45 PM
Hi Chilli, thanks for the feedback!
Hi Aggie, I mostly draw these cars with ballpoint pen on A4 size paper. Sometimes I add some value with markers. Then I scan them in and add some color. Sometimes I print them out and clean up the linework with guides and templates.
Here I experimented with Photoshop filters (mainly the cutout filter) to smoothen the lines a bit.

When you scan the traditional work into the digital world, how do you color? Is it a transparent paint or layer? I use Painter and I also do not know the terminology used in the digital world either... plus being self taught!

Wow! I loved the way u have created the preliminary designs of the cars........specifically Nissan Skyline GTR. Hope to see them in more complexed shapes.

batte812
04-11-2010, 05:55 PM
Looks like I have been neglecting my sketchbook for some time... I have been working but I forgot to scan in some of my work.

Mister 3D: thanks!
Aggie: I work with Photoshop to color my work. I put the lnework on top on a new layer and set the blending mode to "multiply" (Painter heas the same option). That way only the lines show up and the white parts vanish. Then I apply color underneath the linework. Ideally I should redo the linework with paths and stroke the paths to get a cleaner linework.
Bhaskar: thanks; I try to make some more complex shapes, but it's very difficult.

Here are some more cars and some figure drawing (all from ref pics)

Great work here.

I think that your figures would benefit from the same approach that you take in your auto drawings. If you were to imagine the major masses of the body enclosed in three dimensional boxes you could perfectly work out the proportions and perspective and then build the figure into those boxes.

I see in some of your human and animal drawings that you are doing some of this, but compared to the auto drawings the construction lines are relatively flat. You are suggesting the mass conceptions (and obviously thinking about them) but you are not working them out completely. You could take it further.

Here is a Bridgman-esque example of what I mean:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2756/4519376342_a85e2e1eed_b.jpg

For these studies I actually built a little wooden model to help me see and fully understand the forms.

I think constructing your figures in this way would greatly improve the believability of the final product. Don't draw a nose, a finger, or an eye until it's been worked out in structural solids. Keep pushing the figures to be more three dimensional. If you have the three main masses looking right then you can further breakdown the other planes of the body into similar mass conceptions down to the details. The masses themselves can have design, rhythm and pattern.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Joshua, thanks for the reply. You are right: I should try to construct my figures on a more rigid basis. I'm trying to do that - but I still need a lot of practice. Thanks for the illustration as well.

I like the way you construct your human bodies. Somehow you should pay a little more attention to proportion. Some of the females have too large hips. Cheers!
