Check the thread sticked to the top, "calling all noobs" jean darc tutorial, in the beginning they explain one way of getting the pictures into max.

Firstly, why post twice? You have the same question in both? Anyway, simple answer is

create a material called BACKPLATE
add the ferrari bitmap as the diffuse map
go into the diffuse bitmaps parameters and turn on show in viewport (appears as a chequered cube)
create a plane, use the same dimensions as the bitmap i.e. 1280x400 (or whatever pixel size your ferrari jpg is)
apply the BackPlate material to your plane
Rename your plane as Backplate
press f3 (shaded viewport)
you should now have a model plane to work from
rotate the backplate plane until it is in a usefull position
go ito its properties, uncheck "show frozen as grey"
close its properties and freeze the plane
model away

if any of this stuff goes way oever your head, complete all the tutorials that come with max, then come back to this when you have more general grasp of max

You can do this 2 ways.

First, you can set it up as a viewport background. Do this by pressing Alt-b on your keyboard, or access the menu by clicking on the Views rollout at the top of your screen and then select viewport background. The rest should be self explanitory.

The other method, and one that will probably be less of a headache, is to look at the aspect ration of the .jpg.

Create a plane and enter the height and width into the plane's parameters. Now, open you material editor and add the /jpg to the material's diffuse. Make the material self illuminated(it's up at the top of the rollout), and click the little button that looks like a blue cube with white checkers(it's marked show in viewport), and then apply the material to the plane. Since the plane already will have UVW coordinates, it should appear in the viewport. Do this to your front and side views, and then just rotate the planes into place in there proper axis.

Then you can just freeze them and start modeling over them.

Works like a charm. If you have questions about where the above buttons and options are located, hit F1 on you're keyboard and consult the documentation.

Best of luck!
