View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character- Willem
Willem 01-21-2003, 11:57 AM The final story
From the Silmarillion we learn...
Since the beginning of time Eru / Ilúvatar created the Ainur as the fruit of his thoughts
Melkor was in his Melody the only discord
Melkor, called Morgoth by the Elves, had a servant called Gorthaur the Cruel one, a.k.a. Sauron....
From Melkors fortress below the earth they experimented with life. From Utumno came many a bad thing Lively green became sick and rotten...
Aulë, a Vala, one of the eight Aratar created the Dwarves
Melkor stole them to experiment on them
He created Beoloth the old brainless warriors
but it did not succeed as he wanted
so he neglected them
their offspring lived on untill the Era of Endor (middle Earth)
As the Dwarves they live underground they give a faint fluorescent light
In old Sindarinian the name of the creatures is Gúath (faint light)
In the language of the People it is Kwaths
Like the Orcs, also known as Glamhoth,
Kwathoth has a negative sound.

Coming along well, the head has a good shape
I think that you seem to have sufficient detail now, you can add extra details in the texturing phase.
The only things I would really consider tweaking slightly, are the ears, and the areas around the eyes.
The ears are looking a little too plain. Try making them a little less... umm... manufactured. I can't really describe what looks odd about them, but they look a little perfect. Make them tatty or worn looking. Also a bit thinner.
And the areas around the eyes are a bit bulgy, in my opinion. Those rims should be made a little less pronounced :)
You mentioned to me that you will start texturing soon - have you decided what methods you are going to use.

Heya
I think it looks wierd because normally hunters in the wild have eyes at the front of their heads and not at the sides but it looks very gruesome :surprised

Thank for the replies guys and Girlz!
Leigh: I've changed the ears a bit still not very happy with them maybe i hould rebuild them..
tweeked around the eyes..
And Your right about the sufficient detail I think with some nice bumps and maybe some displacements. the head should look nice.
oke after tweeking the vertices a bit I came to this head, I getting pleased with the head.

The clothes look interesting but I wonder if they are really suited to such a character.... Unless someone else makes these characters clothes, I find the idea of this guy sewing clothes for himself a bit difficult to imagine

Thanks for the replys, I am very hard on the texturing right now and its a hell of a job but most important i think.

See Ya!

Ok. Afer making all the different uvw maps the same size. I made a procedural map on the whole body, after this iam going to make the different graphics on the head and so. using a mask the procedural takes care of the border between the edges.
I hope you under stand my English..

I think i have to agree with what leigh said earlier up the page. the model is looking cool but i can't imagine that a creature of this proportions sitting down and making some really intricate chain-mail. maybe if you were to go for a more bashed out metal plate armour it would be more in keeping.
still, it looks really cool.
Willem
02-12-2003, 07:03 AM
hmm why can't he wear clothes I have heard nobody about the Uruk hai's and the orcs..they wear clothes?!? maybe they have a stylist or so?!
But that doesn't matter we've decided to make clothes, (for war) we're now busy creating weapons.
that's why...

Great work! I love the head, very original. My only suggestion is that the chest horns should have a different texture from the rest of the body. Keep up the good work!
Willem
02-12-2003, 07:56 AM
yes you are right but i'm still busy on texturing..
so don't worry they get an other texture.. I busy with some nice tattoo's on his arms..

That is an interesting look, but I think that at the moment it looks a little too hard for skin. It's looking a little too much like smooth rock or marble. You need to change that.
You also need to make it a little less uniform - at the moment, the colours are all just a little too random. Try isolating details into specific areas. You should also make a nice displacement/bump map with lots of cool wrinkles.
The whole thing just looks a bit too procedural right now.
As for the sign on the stomach, if it is burned, it would actually form shiny scar tissue, not that black look. So what you need to do is add that symbol to your spec map, and pump it up a bit to make that area more shiny. You should also add some detail for that into your bump map, since burns do tend to leave areas a bit lumpy.

Thanks leigh thats some critic I can build on, I will work on the textures more. and about the displacement map, Thanks I forgot that damn thing. Updates will follow ..

Well, it looks good. Only two things:
1: If it are horns, and not strange growths, they need an other texture. Look at a rhino for examples.
2: The horns are placed odd. I know it's your design, but they aren't functional. At least, I can't see that function :p

Your right but...
this is just a post of a work in progress of the skin so the horns will get an other texture.. and fot the functionality, the horns are for defence and to hang things on. you get the point when it is finishedHellwolve.

thanks for the reply guys..
Hellwolve: Didn't see it as whining, I take all the comment seriously. thanks:p
Edouard: keep in mind this is only a bump map and a diffuse, so the glossiness and specular will be made soon..but your right about that its to hard i will make it a bit softer..even though thanks for the comments

hey willem, really like the white hand of sauron that you have included across your creatures face!
you may want to think about producing a specualr map for your character to make the inside of his nostrils look a bit more dmp.
also you might think about reducing your bump map as it almost makes your character look a bit too stone like and less organic. This maybe the point that i' missing,
