View Full Version : Fractured stone
MFreywald 01-21-2003, 08:21 AM What different approches would you guys take to making a fractured stone look? For example say a marble floor with slight hairline fractures in it? I'm looking for any and all solutions whether map based or mesh based. Thanks..

if it wasnt supposed to repeat itself (i.e a whole floor)
I would paint the fractures in a layer in photoshop on top of the marble texture (which i would just knick somewhere and repaint).
Then use the fracture layer as a bump. (and perhaps specular too, but then id add some scratches and stuff)
Id also merge the fractures with the texture so that theyd be visible colorwise. Maybe through "soft light" or "vivid light" in photoshop, so that it wouldnt just be black cracks but rather darker areas of the marble.
Sometimes it pays off to paint sort of like highlights around the edges (were talking pixels here) as amost materials if they have cracks are worn around the cracks, and change colour somewhat (depending on the reason of the cracks) but also with age.
Thats a lot of text for a simple solution. :)
Hope im not being too "answer 1A" for you and hope it helps some.

Go to the the Blur Beta site and download blurlib and also the electric map. This is an excellent noise varient thats great for producing cracks in rocks. You might want to also try getting some of their other procedural textures whilst your there. Dinoskin and WaterCell are both very usefull
