Well, I got distracted from my alien post because of lots of work at my workplace, but I decided to work on this a bit tonight. It was going to be an entry for the warhorse sketch category, but it started becoming more involved...
So here's the sketch and what I've done so far...it's about 3-4 hrs in, and no ref for the horse...so if anatomy is off feel free to over sketch and repost...same with the man. I really love the idea of the relationship between horse and humankind...even in a situation as hostile as war, horses were known to stay with their companions.

I don't know much about horse anatomy, but the front leg on the (our) left looks a bit long. The shading on the neck makes the head look disconnected from it. The mane looks like it's off-center, and the mane end on the head doesn't seem to match up with the rest of it. The man's left foot seems a bit small, I don't know if it's intended (looks either broken, or not broken but turned into an uncomfortable position that could only be held when you're actually thinking about it). The rest of the anatomy on the man looks good (can't vouch for the horse), and I think it's too early to crit on the shading.

I appreciate the crit!
Although....sometimes its nice if people have something positive to add to their crits, it's easier to swallow ;)
I will see about the leg and neck on the horse...

I did add some positive stuff (since there aren't many things I see wrong, the overall image is great), but if I really did sound harsh, please forgive me. Ooh, I just noticed the handprint around the eye of the horse, a great touch. The one on the hind leg is hard to see though, maybe you should make it darker or change the color?

I believe the horse anatomy is right on, it was done very well. What I would work on some is the under shadow between the front legs of the horse and also figure looks good, but alitte stiff across the chest. It's a grest start...
