View Full Version : sea monster's tail problem
PhilWesson 01-21-2003, 05:27 AM Hey everyone,
Just need some advice on how to do this. I'm making a sea monster, (kinda loc ness/eel), and i cant get the tail rigging right. I want the tail to be able to swing from side to side, but i cant get it to move right. here are some pictures:

what do u mean cant move right?
if ur using max 5, u can try the spline ik system, if not, i dunno if maya or xsi has anythin like that.
looks about right...I think...Except for the two bones at the begining of the tail, they are facing the "wrong" way. Other than that, that should work just fine... :D

I'm using lightwave, and the 2 bones facing forward are for the head and a bit of the body. When I say it doesnt move right, i mean that I cannot get the tail to sway back and forth. Imagine how a sea monster's tail would move, helping it glide through the water....

I think you will have better luck posting in the LW forum instead of the WIP forum. I did a fish a long time ago, back in the 5.5 days and I made it work with 2 nulls in the same IK chain and pointing the null in opposite directions and the bones would make and "S" shape.
this is not exactly what you are looking for but might help to give you some ideas...

Think i got it. I made another null and placed it near the middle of the tail. Then i set it as a goal object for one of the mid tail bones and then parented it to the end goal. When i want the tail to sway, all i need to do is move and rotate the end goal along the Y axis. Pics coming soon
