Hi,
my name is dustin and i have been lurking on this forum for a while and i finally got the guts to start posting so i can follow my progress and get some feedback you all of you.

first a little about me and my goals with this forum. i have been in the animated film/game and simulation industry for 4 yrs mainly as a 3d modeler and most recently as a texture artist in orlando flordia for Gensis Orlando and Lockheed Martin. i feel that my technical knowledge has plateaued meaning i know the tools but i feel i am lacking the artistic theorys and foundation to progress the way i want to in this industry. i am also looking to go back to school to get a BFA in Illustration at Academy of Arts University in San Francisco California but before i start there i would like to ramp up with this forum so i will be prepared for the work load i am about to undergo.

Thanks,
Dustin

Dustin,

Welcome aboard! :)

We have a number of different Workshop formats here on the Anatomy Forum as you may be already aware. The main venue for improving one's basic skills is the Open Figure Drawing Workshops:

Open Figure Drawing Workshops with Hong Ly and Rebecca Kimmel (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2602753&postcount=3)

You can see the best work from these Workshops here:

Links to all Open Figure Drawing Workshop SPOTLIGHT threads: (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3462029&postcount=1)

And you can be notified of all new Tutorials and Workshops by subscribing here:

Notification of New Open Figure Drawing Workshops / + TUTORIALS - SUBSCRIBE HERE! (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=379951)

The next OFDW won't be until after August 4th, but typically they run on a month long basis. :)

There is also the recently concluded and inspiring 50 Portraits Thread:

Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 1 - The Head (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=375031&page=1&pp=15)

Are you looking to work Traditionally or Digitally? Actually, I think it's better for 3D Artists to work Traditionally. Also, schools typically look for Traditional work in Portfolios ~ in fact, the number one thing that art schools look for is Life Drawing, which is not something the Forum can offer, however, if you were to attend a Life Drawing class at a community class and post your work here, we could critique it. :)

I definitely encourage you to try to find a lifedrawing class in your area. Most community colleges offer relatively inexpensive classes where the fee paid is just for the cost of the model. Local art leagues and such may also offer inexpensive Workshops.

I would encourage you to try a few Portraits / Master Copies from the 50 Portraits Workshop and to post your work both there and here to your own thread. Though the official Workshop is concluded, the thread will remain open for posting indefinitely, and there are 100 Portrait References in post 1 which you can use to copy in order to increase your drawing skill. :)

I look forward to seeing your work! :)

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Dustin,

This thread explains how to use an image host and to post images: :)

New to CGTalk? Learn how to post IMAGES here! (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=267088)

One thing to note is that the image host that I use in the Tutorial, Photobucket, no longer allows any images to be hosted with them that contain even artistic nudity. So my recommendation would be to use imageshack:

http://www.imageshack.us/

However, the Tutorial will still show you how to post images here to CGTalk once you've hosted them with imageshack (or other image hosting site). :)

Cheers,

~Rebeccak
