jim1174 07-27-2006, 10:58 AM are there any 3d scanners on the market for less than $300? also why do 3d scanners cost so much? the ones i have seen on the web sell for thousands of dollars i could get a highend 2d scanner for less than $500

While we're on the topic of pricing - why does a decent PC cost a couple of thousand bucks when I can get a high-end pocket calculator for less than 200 dollars?

LOL - Irony is wasted on some people!
The point of JamesMK's post was to explain that comparing a 2D scanner to a 3D scanner is somewhat analogous to comparing a pocket calculator to a modern PC - i.e. the technology involved in a 3D scanner is significantly more complex than that of a 2D scanner. The 2D scanner is just recording reflected light, the 3D scanner is calculating precise points in 3 dimensions in order to produce a 3D model. That's why they cost so much more.
...maybe Il Papa has a couple lying around he'll let you use if you ask nicely - I hear he's an ardent CG artist ;)
