View Full Version : Gods/Demons - Character - ikmo
A very rough massing model. No detail yet, but I'm trying to get the overall shape done first. Critiques are welcome! :D

Yikes!!.... very nice concept.... reminds me of the guy from MK... Are you gonna give him a tail? Nice model, can't wait to see the head....

Hey cool character so far! I do agree with DarkSy's suggestion of a tail - I think that would look great. I certainly wouldn't want to come across the creature in a dark alleyway... ;)
Thanks!:)
I am one of a few who never played or watched MK, but I do remember that character. It must have been a subliminal design influence!
Yes, a long and tapered tail is in the plans. I also need to make the Eagle head and dragon/eagle wings. He's actually a good demon, too!

Really eager to see the updates... can't wait to see the details sink in on the human portion..... =) We need more 5min update kings =)
Some updated screenShots! Not much modifications, but the tail is on! I was going to make it just taper to a point, but made it funkier instead. Lemme know whatchatink!:D
Hopefully I'll get the head and the wings massed out this weekend. Still want to make a second character - the "Tikbalang" of Filipino folklore. It's a man with a horses head and hooves. Kinda like Mr. Ed meets Conan the Barbarian!

Dude that rocks, what kind of head are you going to have, a cat head like a saber tooth cat. or human or demon. I think a semi cat head would be really cool. thats one powerfull looking beast. good job on making it look like it has weight. Ever thought about animating it? keep it up.

Hey there,
Nice looking beastie. My only suggestion right now is to vary the chest widths. Make one of them appear to be a dominant set of arms and, as a result, beefier pecs and lats for that area. I suggest making the top set a dominant set since it will help to balance your character out a bit by giving him a taper to his upper torso.
Keep up the good work!
Alec
Thanks Darkelfv! :D
The head will actually be a Harpie Eagle's head. I wanted to keep with indigenous creatures of the Philippines - except, of course...urmm, a 4-armed human. :) The lower body is of a giant iguana that I saw many years ago. About 10 feet long!
I do plan on animating him, but after the challenge is over. He will be rigged for posing for the final submital. I hope!
Thanks Alec! :D
Exactly what I was thinking of!! I totally forgot about reducing the prescence of the lower arms. I thought about it at work, but forgot by the time I got home to work on him! Your recommendation gave me much more clarity of concept, though. Double Thanks! :) I'm excited about modifying Gripalag tonight! ...at work right now... SHHHH:rolleyes:
Thanks to eveyone for their comments! It helps enormously! :D

Wow, you use wings3d...... is it easier to use compare to 3ds or maya and the like?... Because I saw quite a few people uses it in the forum and yours and theirs result are excellent...
Thanks DarkSy!
Yeah, Wings3D is one of the best modelers out there... and it's free!:D It's also OSX compatible now thanks to EarlyRiser! It started out as a Nendo knock off, but it is quickly developing into a unique sophisticated program. I fly with Wings3D - no pun intended!
Haven't used 3DS Max in years, so I can't really make a comparison.
Compared to Maya's polygonal modeling, Wings3D kicks it's ass! The only thing I miss from the Maya toolset is the localised modify tools. I prefer the XYZ Move, Scale & Rotate tools of Maya and even moreso of Hash Animation:Master versus the right mouse-click controls of Wings3D!
I also use Hash Animation:Master - amazing 3D package! I wanted to see how quickly I can go with Wings3D. So far, it's going well. Also wanted to test out the Mac OSX port! That's working great as well, missing just a few minor features.
I can output RIB files directly from Wings3D, too. So, I thought I'd try rendering in BMRT if I can figure out how to get around it!

Wow, thanx for the feedback.... Wings sounds good maybe should give it a wirl =)... Good luck on the rendering..
Been a while since my last update, but here are some quick study sketches of the Philippine Eagle (previously mistook them for Harpy Eagles - oops).
I took art classes at the Game Developer's Conferense in San Jose, so I'm in sketch mode. Hopefully I'll have more o show soon!:wip:

wings3d looks so much like mirai~
:)
anyway, u have a really nice concept to start with.
Looking forward for updates from u.:p
Yes kfc, wings 3D was an attempt by some talented people to revive the Nendo software from Nichimen Graphics (Izware, now). It is basically a stand-alone version of the Mirai modeler. I've always like Nendo, but couldn't get it and still can't, so I'll have to just use Wings 3D for free. It is steadily becoming it's own unique program. I really like it. I will import the objs from Wings into Maya for rigging and posing.
Hey, just checked out your demon! Wow! Really Kicks Ass! I'm glad you were able to model him. Can't wait to see more of it!
Some updates. After taking a tutorial class on concept design I was intent on practicing the techniques I had just learned. I'm putting most of my efforts on drawing and painting my character. The initial sketch was from a 4B pencil on paper. The painting is on Photoshop. Critiques are welcome!

very nice concept, I like the bird man, It's a great idea, I hope you have suficient time to finish it.:hmm:
keep working.;)
Yeah! Time is the big issue for me! I don't know if I can finish detailing either my model or my painting, but I'll at least give it a try!
Thanks for the support and kind words. It makes the journey that much better. Now if I can finish something- that would be great!
