View Full Version : Transfering files between NT and XP ?
Hello, may I ask for a guide, or better yet if someone could point me out how to transfer files to and from an NT machine and an XP one? I tried the connection wizzard on the XP but when I go to run the floppy it makes over the NT it says it needs win98 or later.
I have a switch and the 2 cables.
It will be greatly appreciated.

Google Drive mapping. Though, honestly I cant remember if NT's is compatible..
Hi, yeah, all google spits out is the connection wizzard which doesn't work for me.
I'm sure it is possible because that very same NT machine was networked with some other XP pc about a year ago.

Easiest way. if they are on the network and you can ping them. if not setup hardwired IP addy. Then share out the folders on the nt box that you have. the go to the xp box. start run . then type in \\(computername (file://\(computername)) and hit ok or enter. Should show you a box that has all the shares and you just start dumping. moving files from nt to xp is not hard. moving file from xp to linux gets alittle hairy for me. So much to learn. PM me if you need more help.

No need to share files actually. Windows creates default shares initially, so you dont really need to do anything. You simply need a user with a password on the machine you wish to connect to.
In Windows 2000 and up, its quite easy to connect to network resources. Simply go to the address bar in the "My computer" window and type in \\nameofmachine\driveletter$
Note the $ at the end. Once there, it should ask for a password and user name, which would be on the target computer, and you're done. You now can access all files on that drive (on the target machine)

This is true but hopefully in a properly setup sys you have killed those hidden drive shares.

Thanks for your replies.
I typed both: \\mymachine and \\mymachine\driveletter$ in the run window and in the windows explorer with no luck.
At the run window it says that "the network path has not been found"
At the windows explorer it says "Windows doesn't find '\\mymachine\driveletter$' verify the spelling and try again, or look for the object by clicking Start and the Search"
Is this how you ping? typing at command line: ping [ip address]
I did that and it said that the packets had been lost.
So my guess is we have to "setup hardwired IP addy" So how do we do that?
Right now it seems as the computers weren't connected to anything, but the switch leds are lit, meaning the cables are ok I suppose.
I'll be standing by, thanks a lot.
In order for your computers to communicate, they will need an IP address. The simplest thing would be if you have a router of some kind. The router will deal out the IP addresses and everything should be good. If you dont, you will need to manually set the IP on each machine.
For example, I'd set the following on machine 1:
IP: 192.168.0.2
Net Mask: 255.255.255.0
You can leave the rest blank
On the other mahcine, I'd set the IP to 192.168.0.3, and set the netmask to the same.
If both computers can get online, then they will have IPs already.. and this step is not needed.
You could try to use the IP address of each machine rather than thier name, as it tends to be more reliable.
So: \\ipaddress\c$ or \\ipaddress\sharename\
