View Full Version : Making a signature with a Pen
koenf1 07-24-2006, 11:35 PM Hello there...
I'm trying to let a Pen follow some splines ( 7 in this case ) so it forms a signature, it's not a continous line, so i have to split it into seperate parts.
I applied a Path Constraint to the pen, but it only follows one spline, when I try to add the other splines too, it doesn't follow any anymore ( I have the impression it follows them all in the same move).
Anyone up here is willing to tell me how to complete this "animation".
I'm on Max7.
AND an animation/max newbe
Thx,
Koen

So, I guess the multiple splines represent the handwriting itself, right? Why not just create a single spline that represents the path of the pen, and make it hidden -- have it follow on the single hidden spline. (I use Maya, but, that's how I'd do it in my application -- if I'm understanding you.)

hi,
thx for you reply...but it doesn't help. It seems i can't hide splines in 3ds max.
and as soon as i delete a part of it, it splits up into 2 splines, in one object...and it always follows the first spline...and i can't get it to jump to the second spline once it followed the first one :(

Hello Koen,
Here is just the first method from the top of my head...
1) Have both of your splines ready (or as many as you want).
2) Attach them via Edit Spline.
3) Create a line between the two separated splines.
4) Now make sure you weld the ends via weld so it forms a continuous line. Also make sure that the points at the ends are Bezier Corner (the one I think will be most suited).
5) Now this parts require work... you have to shape the new line(s) (you are allow to create as many ponits in between to get your result) to form the arc of the path where the pen lifts from the first spline and lands on the second spline.
6) When animating the pen (via Motion Panel -> %Along Path), make sure you have the ease in and out to get a convincing result.
This is just the first method I thought up. I am sure there are probably better methods. I hope this helps. Best of luck!
regards,
Pete
