View Full Version : 3ds max 5 problem
Hello,
I'm new to this forum and to 3ds max. Whenever I start
3ds max 5 it takes about 5 minutes to load up, and whenever I exit the program my PC is too slow to even click a desktop icon.
Maybe it has something to do with my PC's specs.
I use Win XP Home on this PC:
AMD Athlon 1.4 ghz
512 mb ddr ram
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro 128 mb ddr
Any advice to fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I can think of is to upgrade to XP PRO. Because Max isn't really supported for Home edition.
Something you might want to try though, but I'm not sure if this feature is in Home edition, is to right click on the 3dsmax.exe file and go to the Compatibility Tab. Then check the Run this program in compatibility mode check box and choose another option in the list.
Try the other settings too, like Disable visual themes etc.
Speaking of visual themes, right-click on the desktop, go to the Appearance Tab and click on the Effects button. Turn off fades for menus and uncheck Show window contents while dragging. And while you're there, if you haven't done it already, choose ClearType to smooth screen fonts.
Let us know if these things help or not.

also if you've added a ton of scripts and 3rd party plugins they'll dramitaclly increase your load time.

Go here: http://vi2.com/index.php?arch=1
and look at that post about 3dsmax running slow.
Thanks alot, Aaron. I do use Norton and it has been slowing down my PC. I'm going to install the update now. Thanks again.

It could also be a problem with a driver on your computer such as ATI display drivers trying to work in the graphics environment that you have specified.
I would also do the regular system checks (OS up to date, BIOS up to date, defrag hard drive, check drive for errors, check what programs are running in case one of them is interfering, etc.)

Well the problem has been fixed and 3ds max is running better than I've ever seen it run. Thanks for all your help and I look forward to talking to you all in the forum again.

Just for the record, I don't think XP Home will be the cause of MAX related problems. Windows ME, and 98, and all the crappy-assed versions before that, sure, NT4, W2k, XPPro, XPHome, etc., it all ought to be good.
I'm open for articles and arguments that says otherwise of course, but other than that I'll argue that you're safe.
Good to see your problem solved.. maybe we need a sticky-FAQ thread about these issues?

hi everybody !!!!
regarding 3dsmax5 sloppiness I can tell you the folowing:
1. All the following applies to a PC, 866 MHz with Win 2000
AND Norton 2003 Internet Securiy installed.
2. I have done the monitoring of Processor Usage at the Windows Task Administrator ( Ctl + Alt + Del > Task Administrator > Performace Tab ).
There you can see how much of the full processor capability isbeen used by all the programs running at such time on the PC.
Usually, if you are not running any application in the PC, you get aan oscillating line moving bettwen 0 and 20%.
As soon as you start an application you will see such line increasing its level few seconds during the program start up and then ( depending on the application ) it should return at level bellow of 20%.
In a good perfoming 3dsmax it should return to such level ( bellow 20%)
providing that no job is done on it ( such as rendering, modeling, etc )
3. BEFORE 3dmax5.0 start: As expected everything s fine and level rtuen bllow 20% after start up.
4.DURING 3dsmax5.0 running time: You will see that the Performance level still at higer levels, between 60 and 80%. That means that CPU proccessor is expending a mayor part of its capability in an unknown chore. ( remember that we are not doing nothing with the 3dsmax )
5.AFTER 3dsmax5.0 is closed. If you close 3dsmax5.0 you expect the Performance to get down a previous levels.
But such is not the case. You will see that performace is still at 60 - 80% level. You will see that machine then become sloppy.
The only way to get back such Performance level is RESTART the PC!!!!
My personal guess is as that, as soon as you start the 3dsmax an sleepy and hiden monster, named c-dilla starts and never stops.
6.Dont worry, be happy !!! 3dsmax 5.1 definitelly had fixed the problem.
Hope this helps everybody

I've got the same stuff, only I run winXP pro, and have ATI radeon 8500.
The ATI is the problem. If you are closing 3dsmax, the progress of 3dsmax is still running in the task manager. So that's the thing your system is slow.
When you run 3dsmax in OpenGl, you got that problem, the funny thing is, when you use DirectX, you have no problem at all.
When U upgrade to 5.1, the problem still lives
