... more importantly than what happens to the shares... is this merger fluff or can something great come out of it?

Thereís another, more forward looking, possibility why AMD would want to buy ATI and thatís AMDís HTX coprocessor socket and its possible use as a graphic (http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/article/1835/#) accelerator.

What is interesting is the possibility of having a "dual core" CPU where one of the cores is the GPU. That could make for some very interesting performance results. Ideally, this merger is good for both companies, it gives AMD some new markets, and brings in some much needed inhouse motherboard chipset design ability (who can say AMD's 8000 series chipset was any good? :P)

I just hope this means that ATI's graphics drivers will become better, and include some much needed linux support...
