July 23, 2006 - Without a doubt, the most anticipated part of Sony Pictures' presentation Saturday at Comic-Con International in San Diego was its panel for next summer's Spider-Man 3.

Attending the packed presentation were director Sam Raimi and producer Laura Ziskin, along with the film's stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Thomas Haden Church, Bryce Dallas Howard and Topher Grace.

Raimi finally (and rather anti-climatically) confirmed that the new villains in the film are indeed Sandman and Venom, and that James Franco's vengeful Harry Osborn will not be playing either the new Green Goblin or Hobgoblin in the movie.

Raimi debuted never-before-seen footage from Spider-Man 3, although a good amount of it was unfinished. CG animatics were in place of final special effects sequences in certain places but the rough nature of the footage did nothing to deter the responses from the thousands of fans that saw it.

The footage, which was was cut as a trailer, begins with Peter Parker looking at his reflection in a mirror and then slowly revealing the new black Spidey costume underneath his street clothes. "All will be lost," we are told before we find Topher Grace's Eddie Brock praying in a church. And what is he asking of God? Why, to kill Peter Parker, of course!

The rest of the footage included battle sequences between Sandman and the police, as well as between Harry and Spidey. There are shots of love interests Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy, as well as shots of both Peter Parker and Eddie Brock becoming overwhelmed at different points by the black symbiote suit. The trailer ends with the "money shot": the first look at the CG-animated Venom in all his vicious glory!

Fan reaction to this exclusive peek at Venom was through the roof. (Sadly, the panel only showed the new footage once.) Many of these wildly enthusiastic reactions were articulated during the Q&A session with Raimi and company that followed.

I have heard of rumors that neither Raimi or Maguire won't to do Spiderman after #3... If that rumors turns out to be true, and with Eddie Brock becoming Venom at the end of Spiderman 3, how will the franchise live on?

Man I feel bad for all you guys who didnt see it, it was so awesome even with the unfinished effects. The highlights were seeing goblin slashing at spidey with some type of sword weapon and seeing venom in all his cg glory, even though it was for 2 or so seconds.

I think Raimi is the one who's out after this one, i know he want's to get back to make Evil Dead 4 and some other new films.

I imagine that he will end up being small, akin to the original black suit Spiderman, but with teeth. It's a shame really...Venom was one of my favorite supervillians of all time.

Oh Venom is definately larger then spiderman but no enormous bulging veins like in some of the variations of venom. Heres a description of the venom appearance by aintitcool.com

"...The SPIDER-MAN 3 logo comes up and you think that's it... but then we saw some unfinished effects of the symbiote dripping down, falling towards Topher Grace who is looking up. One drop falls and hits his right hand, immediately wrapping around his hand. The bulk of the symbiote hits him and wraps around him, pulling him to the ground, totally engulfing him. A cut and the camera is low to the ground a good distance away. It Raimi-cams EVIL DEAD style towards the black bulking mass. As it gets near the mass, Venom's head whips up looking straight into camera, which doesn't slow down and ends up rushing into his mouth where it goes to black."

As I've been saying, it doesn't make sense to show Spidey tearing off the suit and now the Venom transformation a year ahead of release if that's going to be the ending, it'd be like Doc Ock drowning himself and Harry finding the Gobby Gear in the first teaser for Spiderman 2

Just makes me want it more!

And, I agree, I'm sure venom will be in full-effect by the half way point.

I see what your saying and I thought the same thing but im sure raimi and sony know what they're doing and that they'll be plenty more surprises when the movie opens.

Funny/sad thing is
The other girl looks more MJ (tall, curvy, and actually hot gorgeous amazon as opposed to tween prepub) than Kirsten Dunst ever will.

The article cited states that "James Franco's vengeful Harry Osborn will not be playing either the new Green Goblin or Hobgoblin in the movie." That statement seems to contradict what we see in the trailer and what a couple people have reported seeing in the ComiCon footage. Does anyone know what's going on with Gobby?

I think Sam Raimi said that in the movie Harry is just using his fathers equipment to fight Peter but hes not an all out villian like Green goblin 2 or Hobgoblin etc..

Pasty Dunst is okay looking but not what Mary Jane should look like.

Howard looks more like MJ.

Rachel McAdams should have been MJ

or Jessica Biel

They have said they will not return, but Spiderman can be changed around a bit.

Jake Gylenhal can be Spiderman. ( Think of James Bond) How many Bonds have we had? We can definately have another Peter. Spiderman is basically the same since he is a costumed here.

Kirsten Dunst who cares if she is in it or not, we can definately see another Mary Jane. (see above red heads) Rumor is Mary Jane dies anyways.

So Spiderman 4 can have Gwen Stacy and I'm sure miss Howard will return for that part, or we can do a whole new love interest in the form of Black Cat in SP4.

Raimi not returning is really the only sad thing. He has done such a good job so far. I think out of all the superhero movies he has done the best.

Singer is okay but his Superman was weak in comparison to an action packed Spiderman. (He'd probably have Spiderman have a kid and basically posed sitting on a building for half the film, and then fighting normal people the whole way through instead of a supervillian.)

I don't know of any director who can really have that indie raw feel of movie making and respect for the fans and story and the ability to know a good script.
We'll just have to see. He has big shoes to fill. While the actors can easily be replaced.

Gylenhal for McGuire. No biggie.

you know......in the begining comics venom wasnt really all that ripped....and was drawn by todd macfarlane . the movie version is suppose to be like his version which in my opinion looked best. As the symbiote grows it later makes brock even stronger and the suit looks bigger and more buff.

As others have stated, and I earlier in other threads, I don't think that this will be the case. It doesn't make sense for a director to setup as key of a character just to hope that the franchise continues in his absence, and if they do continue it, that the new crew does justice to the setup.

For this reason, Brock will become Venom about half way through, and maybe only be heard of throughout as Spidey battles Sandman and Goblin, then at the end they will show him in all his glory. This story will be complete, though it will most likely be left open for further sequels, I'm sure it will come to a close.

If I were a director I wouldn't want someone else screwing up what I worked hard at establishing, and I certainly wouldn't spend the time and money to create a character that I knew I wasn't going to use.

I thought someone might have come across this little interview already:

" Simmons on Spider-Man 3 & More Sequels
Source: (http://www.tvguide.com/News/Insider/?cmsGuid=%7B32D846FC-31C8-4FFA-94B4-FB4FDF65CF4E%7D)
TV Guide

J.K. Simmons talked to TV Guide about returning as J. Jonah Jameson in [/url]Spider Man 3 and possibly making more sequels. Simmons says he wrapped filming two or three weeks ago.

TVGuide.com: What's your feeling on 3? Judging by the trailers, it looks darker.
Simmons: I think it pulls in a lot of interesting directions. Of course we're a long ways from seeing a final version of it, but my stuff, we had a lot of fun doing. I probably had not as much to do as I did in the second one and maybe a little more than I had in the first one, but from what I saw the new bad-guy stuff is once again going to top its predecessor.

TVGuide.com: In 2, we met Jonah's son, who in Spider-Man lore evolves into a villain. But they're not playing that card yet?
Simmons: Not yet. Hopefully there are plenty of cards to play for [Parts] 4, 5, 6.... I'll do a Spider-Man for every two or three years for the next couple decades if they want. That'd be all right!

TVGuide.com: Was there any talk of Spider-Man 4 on the set?
Simmons: Yeah, it got mentioned. In fact, the last couple of days I shot was at the very end of the schedule we were doing some night-action scenes in New York and [director] Sam [Raimi] was talking about it. It's not a done deal because everybody's deals, including Sam Raimi's and all the actors', was for three pictures. But he's certainly open to doing more."
