Well, in the end here's what matters:

The EV7 is the fastest gun in the West for FP, until Madison ships (sequel to Itanium2).

The EV7 is also going to be the last Alpha family member. I think it's scheduled to get a die-shrink later this year (EV79), which is to be the Alpha's last gasp, as it were.

There will be some Alpha expertise in Intel processors (eventually) in addition to Alpha compiler expertise in Intel compilers, since Intel acquired the Alpha IP, development teams, and compiler teams from Compaq -- and made sure that they convinced the staff to stay.
