"Self Portrait-Davey Jones Crewmember"
Inspired by
Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man Chest

Well we will try something different today.

Imagine you have contracted by ILM to work @ their concept art department. You have been tasked to design undead crewmembers for Davey Jones ship' the Flying Dutchman.

So here is your assignment, draw yourself as a member of Davey Jones Ship. Keep in mind that it has to look like you are "becoming" part of the ocean.

And for inspiration here is some Concept art for the movie
by Crash McCreery:
DAVEY (http://www.canmag.com/images/front/pirates/davey.jpg) JONES (http://www.canmag.com/images/front/pirates/davey.jpg)

I went for a Medusa like look, with eels as hair =p
''I'' have eel as hair, gills, shark teeth(tiny ones, but still) and well, blue skin^^
This topic totally rules, we should have more like theese Roberto!! I loved it!

time spent, no idea, probably two or three hours. Program; Photoshop.http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/uglypaperdoll/CGtalk/monsterme.jpg

Nice sketches guys.
Here's mine started with pen and paper then added color in photoshop a few hours total.

I tried to show painful morphing like they did in the movie like the seahorse leg blending in with the arm and the swordfish the other arm and a shark head with lots of barnacles and seaweed with some corral on the legs. I hope you guys like it.

Hey guys, I haven't done the DSG in quite a while. This great topic along with having the day off is irresistable for me to participate. If this topic gets enough replies, I'll do a lengthy comments post, too.

I know its way oversaturated considering the monotone crew in the movie, but all of my sketches are oversaturated. I have lots more ideas for this topic, so maybe I'll do another tonight. ? hours, PSCS2, intous 2, laptop.

Photoshop, an hour or so.

Now this guy, he isn't like the others. Yes, he sold his soul and has to work a hundred years to pay off, but Davey Jones does not know how much worth for that soul he's going to get. No, not like the others at all: he just appears to do what they do, but underneath the real person survives, strong - and with a plan.

I wanted to make me to be different, instead of being taken over by the sea I'm slowly being torn apart by the sea, but the character, the person, stays alive, no matter how much pieces change. A bit like Davey Jones and Turner-chap; the rest are mutated until they're no longer characters, but those characters are mutated without loosing themselves.

I had to have a go at it even though I haven't seen the movie.

Take me. Drown me, let me get half eaten by fish, cover in seaweed and let sponges grow on top...

Add some rain for extra effect...

I gotta admit, I used a photo ref for myself :P Used just the outline :)

Went overboard with this one (no pun intended)- was so pleased with the portait, I couldn't resist rounding the character out. Kinda went nuts on the minutae. As a result, around 6-7 hours I guess. Painter and Photoshop, as always. Aaarh!

I did another one, since I watched Pirates a couple of days ago. Great creatures! I did some upgrade of my previous sting ray character, so here is a whole body.

Pencils (4H and F) and an hour of sketching.

Tomorrow I'm probably going to sooo regret what I'm doing right now, but I just found this thread about an hour ago and since it's almost a week old now with my luck tomorrow it will be closed for submissions or something. It's almost 2:00AM here and I wish I found this thread couple of days ago so I could have taken the necessary time to think and create something better than those scribbles below, but oh well...

After I made the one on the left I realized that it actually looks more like something that would walk out of "Braindead" rather than swing a saber and chant seaman songs, so I decided to quickly draft one more (the one on the right). That stuff in my face and the hair is supposed to be that ... stuff that grows on the coral reefs or whatever it is called, I believe to have seen it on the original concept drawings as well (there's not much of it on my face yet, since I've been a member of the crew for only a short amount of time and these "things" need time to grow - my hair was less lucky, though).

Both together took me around 10min with about 2-3 min spent on the right one (Intuos3, Sketchbook) and the only good thing afterwards seems to be that you actually cannot recognize my face behind it (so much to the self-portrait idea, though :D ). And I just realized if I did not write so much in this posting I could have used the time to create one solid drawing instead of two quick sketches I will probably feel ashamed for tomorrow... Well, now it's too late, so here it goes, good night all!

2.5 to 3 hours in Adobe Photoshop 5.0. Wanted to keep alot of human characteristics (one of the newly dead?) Thought it might be creepier that way.
