hey guys...

first off...just wanna say hello to everyone.
i'm starting to get more into 3D now,
so i'm really out of shape with maya, but i do know basics.

anywho...

i have this logo (polygon), but...it's only got a front, top, and bottom...but no BACK!
i've been trying Merge This, Merge That...FILL HOLE, and i can't get it to work :-(
can someone please help? i just need the walls closed and i'm fine.

heres my file:

www.amcsolutions.net/latearrival/logo.mb (http://www.amcsolutions.net/latearrival/logo.mb)

so...is it just me?!
can someone please help?
it's very very important.
i'm on the crappiest deadline :-(

i mean...if someone can show me what i'm doing wrong, it will be highly appreciated.

hi, sounds like there are a few ways to cover your bottom here,

1, use the append to polygon tool. with it, click on one edge, then you should see arrows pointing in the direction you should continue clicking on the edges. when the hole is filled with pink, hit enter and it will fill the hole.

2, extrude one of the edges across and merge the 2 new vertecies with the 2 from the other side, closing off the hole.

hope that helps

Well that is a job of 2 minutes work and maybe 10 clicks with the left mouse button.

The mesh you imported isn't clean. It has some history information assigned that keep some tools from working correctly.

Vertices aren't merged and thats why your fill hole tool doesn't work. The append to polygon tool works but this would mean that you recreate the back side of the logo by hand. I wouldn't go for this solution. Cleaning and debugging this simple scene will help. Check the border egdes of the mech and you will find a solution.

From what software package did you get the fbx file? It is always interesting to see how such standard exchange format doesn't work as it is supposed to be.

Oh and btw: If I hear the word deaadline I assume this work is for a payed job and if this is the case you should really know what you are doing ... well :deal:

hi. i'm getting a vertex count of 374 on the last two letters alone. that's probably a good place to start.

quickndirty would be cut in half, duplicate, and scale -1.

1. Drag-select all of the polygonal objects

2. select menu-->Edit Polygons-->Merge Multiple Edges Options

3. enter "0.0100" in the Threshold field

4. set "World Space Coords" to active

5. Press "Sew" button to accept these settings

6. Deselect items, then drag-select them again

7. select menu-->Edit Polygons-->Fill Hole

DONE

Can anyone do this in fewer steps? I would like to learn.

JoyMODE101 Welcome to you aswell.

Just checking, did you select one edge of the hole before saying fill hole?

Cheers
