tide78 07-22-2006, 09:38 PM This is the first time I have attempted to realistically model a head. I basically just wanted to watch the progression of this model and get feedback from people. But here it is so far, I have about four hours into it or so.

Great start! Could you post the wires?

Looks nice :), but I think the chin/jaw looks abit odd, unless you are really like that :p

ok, so here is some more progress. The ear is close but not quite there yet. But I couldn't wait to see what the head might look like all mirrored. I think I still have a bit of tweaking to do to it though.

Not bad for a first head man! But you should really look more closely at the anatomy of the human face. Your lips seem to be streched out to far in corners. Look at how the ear is positioned on a real human head, and also how the skull curves around the sides. I think the front of the head is looking pretty good, besides the mouth stretching, but the side of the head needs quite a bit of work. I'm very new to character modeling myself, but my Game Design teacher is really pushing us to learn the anatomy and whatnot.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies, but I supose I should state that I am not just going from my head. As far as placement and anatomy goes, I am working from orthographic reference, so you're going to have to take it up with my parents for making me ugly. :D Just so you can see for yourselves, heres my reference pics.

I'll be posting another update soon, so keep watching!

Okay, so I am almost to the point where I am ready to start unwrapping this model. Basically I just want to make sure my mesh is good. I would appreciate any critiques on my mesh or if you spot something with the topology that looks weird to you, go ahead and point it out. I mainly just want to have my mesh looking good before I start to mess with texturing and lighting. So here are some progress pics for you to look at.
the base mesh:

and the mesh with a smooth:

and the topology without wires:

and one of the profile for good measure:

looking forward to hearing from you guys...

allright, I finally got a chance to throw a quick texture on the model to get an idea of how its going to look when I start to get the texture going. input is always welcome.

So after I re textured this model, I am playing around with the SSS shader that's built into maya and I am getting some weird stuff going on, like my specular maps are totally blown out unless I turn them way down and then they don't really work anymore. :D But I think this might turn out ok with some tweaking. I still have a bit of work to do on the maps and everything, but I hope to get some tips and or hints on making this look better. Has anyone out there run into renders that look like this using SSS_Skin?

hey you know what, for the first time, it's really not bad at all.
here's your face compare to your model. you can try to do the same thing for your side view, 45 view.

you have some really good ref image, really really good. the key is to see yourself, to feel yourself, in terms of your own shape. dont be affraid of touching your own face or gazing into a mirror for like 30 mins or so, those really helps.
good work, good progress. i will be back more often.

Ok, I have had some time to refine this model a bit and I just wanted to post an update before this thread goes into the abyss to be forgotten forever. I know the model's proportions are still off a bit, and the texture needs some work, but feel free to comment or crit by any means.

So after plenty of messing around, I have started to make things work a bit. I am still having problems getting my bump map to function using the sss_fast_skin shader. Also I am having weird artifacts that look like film grain kind of. You can see it in the pictures below. As always feel free to comment or give crits or even suggestions to fix problems that I have missed. I am currently reading through all the skin shader threads but not finding anything that helps with these problems, so if you know the answer, I would love to hear it.

Maybe you haven't connected the bump map properly and that's causing the artifacts? Did you connect it via a bump 2d node in the hypershade or just click in the bump map button in the sss attributes? Also I think it may be just a tiny bit too waxy. But otherwise, it's looking great. The profile looks pretty spot on.

that looks really good, but I think his nose is not matching with your nose in the picture. Yours look more round shaped.

-yeah, I have tried both 2d and 3d bump nodes, in fact, that artifacting happens when I put a bump node in there. I have tried displacement also, and get no good result with that either. It just ends up looking all puffy.

- I agree, thanks for the input man!

I've got a feeling we aren't thinking of the same thing. Sorry to be a pain in the ass but just to be sure could you post a picture of the sss with all it's connections, textures etc as it looks in the hypershade? And a screenshot of the sss attributes? If somethings wrong we should be able to find out by looking at these things.

Yeah sure man, heres a shot of the hypershade with the connections listed as they are. and as far as the settings go, they are default as of now, with a tweak to the scale of the SSS in the algorithm section. I changed that to 3 at this point.

Hopefully you can read this. If not, let me know, and I'll replace it with a higher res version. Thanks ahead for your attention to this. Greatly appreciated.

The bump section looks all in order. And I can't see anything else wrong elsewhere. Sorry dude, I don't know what's wrong.
I do recall seeing a thread all about sss in another section of these forums, perhaps you've seen it, but there might be an answer there.
Good luck, and don't give up!

Wow, how frustrating. I finally got the bump working now. My problem was that I didn't have any texture filtering turned on in my map attributes. Weird enough, If you turn the filtering off, you get that funky stuff I have in the renders above, and if you turn it on, you get a nice bump. This is what I have at this point. I want to work the textures over a bit more and then move on to the hair. Does anyone have any preference to how good hair gets done other than shave and a haircut?

Lol, so it was the filter. I tried turning that down once, in fact it actually made my bump even better and more crisp but it took longer to render.
I know nothing about hair plugins so can't help you there.

Ok, so I had some time to play around with the lighting on this guy a bit and this is where it's at right now. Any comments and or suggestions on how to improve it would be greatly appreciated.
