Hi, for some reason in After Effects I can't hear audio, and then when I render it the final video doesn't have audio. Why would this be? I don't think I changed any settings...

Thanks for the help,
Nathan

Hi, for some reason in After Effects I can't hear audio, and then when I render it the final video doesn't have audio. Why would this be? I don't think I changed any settings...

1st question: What are your settings? And which settings? Render settings maybe? If the audio output isn't activated in the render settings, you won't hear anything(if it is an file format which supports audio at al - for very obvious reasions you won't hear sound in image sequencesl). You can preview your sound in the timeline by rendering to ram or previewing it by hittin 'del' on the NumPad

My settings would just be the default settings, as I don't think I changed any of them. The file format definitely supports audio, I think it's a .wmv file type. When I press the "." key (or delete) in the numpad, After Effects starts playing the audio. But the video in the preview window doesn't move. And when I press the space bar(I thought that was how you previewed things) the video moves but no audio... And like I said when I render it I get the video but no audio?

In the render settings are you turning audio on? it is off by default.

You have to press the 0 on the NumPad to create a RAM preview which plays video and audio.
Read the manual, it's explained there.

When I press "0" in the numpad after effects just plays the first few seconds off the movie with no sound then stops, thats it?

thats it? Don't know. Is it?

I don't know nothing about your project, neither your setting nor where your audio starts, if it is activated at all. I suggest you once again to read your manual about how to handle and how to render audio.

I'm sorry, I'm afraid I worded my post rather badly... By "that's it?", I meant that all that happened when I pressed the "0" key and why would that be.

Just to make it clear: It would be a lot easier if you would provide more information. It's like tapping in the dark now. No sound could be a million things, wrong file format(AE doesn't likes mp3 that much, the range for the RAM preview could be before or behind the in/out point of your audio layer, your audio layer may be switched off, the audio level maybe set to low, there maybe no sound on that spot where you render and so on.

Ok, let me try to explain exactly what is happening. In the "Time Controls" window, if I click the "Play/Pause" button the video plays but no audio. In the "Time Controls" window if I click the "RAM Preview" button it the application kind of freezes up for a second and then plays about two seconds of video with audio then stops.

Quite normal. Depending on the complexity of your project, the RAM preview may just play a few seconds. It may be the case that the range of the RAM preview is limited but it is possible to extend it by dragging the handles for the working range(german version here so I'm not that sure about the english syntax).

So if that's normal then why do you think when I render my movie there is no audio? To render I: Click composition -> Add to Render Queue -> Render.

If the audio output isn't activated in the render settings, you won't hear anything...
What's about that?

Which settings are you talking about? I can't find a set of settings called "render settings"...

Use the Render Queue to render your compositions. There you shall find the Render Settings of Utmost Mystery.

AE default setting are not to play audio, so it won't play it even with RAM preview - if you've just installed it. Can't remember where the settings tab thingie can be found, but searching for preview and audio in AE help might be useful.

I'm afraid I don't have any of those options :( I'm using v7.0 if that makes a difference.

This becomes more and more ridiculous. Read your manual, I'm sure AE 7 CAN render audio into clips.

Yup. Comedy gold for the AE prosumer.

Nathan-H: Render Queue looks a Leetle Bit Different in AE 7, but the exactly same tabs can be found there. Put on your glasses and try a bit harder, mate.

Finally figured it out :) Had to go to: Edit -> Templates -> Output Module -> Edit -> and check the "audio output" box.
