Title: Rui & Andrea Illustration
Name: Warren Louw
Country: South Africa
Software: Photoshop
Took a total of 14 frustrating full days to complete back in the days when I still used a mouse to render. This was around the time when Final Fantasy played quite a large role in my inspiration behind my artwork, so you can see where Ive come from.
The characters were designed well before I got to this illustration. I wanted to create a similar feel with both. It took a while to actually figure out how I would pose them out in this artwork, but I think in the end it worked out fine.
The backround didnt really need reference, since I had a strong visual idea of how it should look. The only thing was, was that it took a while to finish and it got quite repetitive...
Anyway, thank you all for checking it out!
Below is a link including the two character design illustrations:

Looks very good, however the black linework does not work for me, it takes away a lot and makes the image look flat. the lower part of the imae looks bit to dark, to many black values, to less depth. The shows on the guys are realy nice, but the irls shading looks rather simple and flat, expecially the hair.
Did you use any ref on the cloths? should post link if you did.
Cheers

Thanks for your comment. Im aware that theres much wrong with this artwork. I did this 2 years ago, was my 1st full illustration, and I was very new to photoshop and creating artwork just from my head, so Ive learned and moved on.
As for the ref, the ref I did have was trashed years ago. Its an old artwork, so not much is still around from the artwork expect for this final piece.

The black linework works for me. It seems to be part of your style.
My one crit would be to include the yellowish light source at the top left of the figures. That would really help bring out some depth and volume.
Nice piece!!

I disagree with Randis about the black line work. I like it as it reminds me of SNK's paintings.

You already know I like the linework. I'll agree that the piece is a little dark overall and could use a yellow light added. The color schemes looks like it's about to storm, I like that :) Gives off a lot of mood.

The linework also works for me. It is quite obviously a very clean work and the lines really add to your personal style - bravo ! I like it and I don't really see any reason why someone should ask you for reference photos for this one .... if there was a photo in the first place, it has obviously completely disappeared ! That's exactly what photoreferences should do - disappear !

Hey, thanks a lot you guys! My lineart has pretty much always stuck with me for some reason... So, Im gana only try work with it best I can.
About the yellow light source needed, I get what you mean totally. So I got playing around with it and I think I kinda fixed it, or atleast made it better. But anyway, thats as far as Im going with touching this artwork up...

I'd say just continue like you do - you are developping a very nice personal style and that's not so easy

It's like a fine mix. Both real and not, I like it and your style.

Really unusual style you have. I personally love the linework round the realistic colouring, it's quite difficult to ge ta balance with artwork like that, but you do it really nicely. And though the characterisation may be Square-Enix influenced, I don't think I've ever seen anything like this in any of their artwork, so you've really made this something all of your own. Great work.

I think this is ace! I love the line work and the fact that this is rendered with a mouse amazes me.
I do find the perspective confusing - i'm looking up at the figures but seem to look down on the clouds -but i even like that.
Hoorah. nice one.
