Hey, I have a slight problem in that I need to change some joint names in a reference file but be able to have the files with animation in that are referencing that file to remember what joints they are and retain their animatiion data (which obviously they are currently not doing)... any way to get around this rather annoying trait would be a great help!

you could try saving the 'master' file as ascii and doing a search-replace on the joint name.

Changing joint names on a master file shouldn't be a problem if your animation in your referening file is on your control objects instead of directly on your joints. If the animation is on your joints, you have a problem which is not so easy to get around.

If you rename the master file, most likely the animation nodes will become disconnected from their respective joints but they might still be there in the file, just, er, disconnected. You can manually reconnect them to your renamed joints by selecting *RN* in your wildcard select and showing input and outputs in the hypergraph (Usually disassociated keyfrae nodes stay connected to a node with RN included in its name). The keyframe nodes will have the previous name of the joint, you just have to connect their outputs to the respective joint attributes. This, needless to say, is TDous, but necessary to get your animation reconnected.
