Hi

Before i go into this, am not sure if i have posted this in the right section. So if it is in the wrong section then am sorry.

Anyway.....I've been trying to create this 3D text effect thats on this flyer (where its say Soca Bashment) for a while now but just cant get it right http://www.silverstarsound.co.uk/eve...ocavbashft.jpg (http://www.silverstarsound.co.uk/event_images/socavbashft.jpg). I guessin its done in a 3D Program cause I cant get the same effect in photoshop, but then again I cant get the same kind of look or feel in 3D as well.

I have 3D Max & Cinema 4D. If anyone could point me to a tutorial or give me some help in either one of these programs to creating this effect the that would be great.

Thanks http://www.kirupa.com/forum/images/smilies/thumb2.gif

Looks like some reflective surface, maybe raytraced with some environment map.

Have a look at www.neilblevins.com, he explains some stuff about metallic surfaces and reflection quite well.

I kind of understand whats been said on this website but alot of it is using Brazil.

Is there a simpler way to create this effect?

Maybe you read more carefully again, everything described there is possible with ANY other renderer.
Reflection is not an effect, it's a material property, so maybe you search your help files for more details concerning raytracing and reflections.

am quite new to all this, so i do apologise. I was starting to get a bit lost. Am qiuite good in creating stuff but when if comes to giving it a finished look, then when it all goes ****.

So lighting and textureing is the problem for me.

I'll have to have another look though it again.

Add an fallof map into yoour reflections, set it to fresnel, add an raytrace map in the side slot. This will basically create a reflection like described here

http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/metal_and_refs/metal_and_refs.htm

in the 'Fresnel and IOR' chapter.

You will have to play around with values for IOR or withthe mix curve. Keep in mind that a proper reflection requires something to reflect, either other objects or an environment map for thy raytrace map.

hey thanks for having the patcience with me scrmiski. Am gonna give that a go and have another read through. And if i do manage to create something, then i'll post it up.

thanks again

The pink text? Definitely environment map in the reflection I think. It just doesn't look raytraced at all.

Not sure about it. Using a map would mean to split up into submaterials. Especially the reflecton in the 'B' from the 'a' looks raytraced. Maybe a mix of both or a faked Specular.

it's probably raytraced but environment/cube mapping could do the same

not to be captain obvious, but aside from putting the materials on, it sounds like you are asking how to make the geometry. just import or create the text with the spline text tool, and use a bevel modifier. if you import text from illustrator, you ought to scale it up with an xform or in the subobject mode.

If you're trying to make your text all reflective, you should also check out this tutorial:

http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/flat_metallic_surfaces/flat_metallic_surfaces.htm

And no, you don't need brazil for this stuff, the image at the bottom of the tutorial was made using the good old scanline renderer.
