Im working on a animated short... Cant give too much info out about it because i want to make it and dont want someone else to steal my idea... hehe anyways.. In the short a hairy animal will get his hair cut off with a knife. The question is, im looking for some ideas on how i should go about doing this. PaintFX or Maya Fur.... Once the creature is haired how would i go about making the hair go flying off and falling to the ground. My idea was to use maya Fur( which is ideal for my character ), and paint fur onto tiny peices of geometrythat i can fling off the character.

Basically Have 2 geometry layers on the character, skin layer. Then a broken up layer which fur painted on them. That way i can just take that layer and make them into active rigid bodies and using fields blow them off and make them fall to the ground.

If you guys have any better ideas, please help me out :)

Thanks in advance.

i would rather use an emitter that emits sprites (with your hair texture on) , and animate the lenght of the fur so it will look like the hair is getting chopped off after each emission.
