View Full Version : Render Times - Hair..please post
Hey all,
I am thinking of moving to C4D for total production of my movie and had one question that is really key in making the move in buying hair.
Can you post some of your render times and images? I'd love to see how fast it renders and what to expect as my character for the story has a LOT of hair.
I want to have my character similiar to the one below...which will be altered and remodeled with hair instead of hte modelled fake hair

So as you can see, lots of hair. I want to see if render times would be feasible. I'm going for a simple texture look on the models themselves to speed up rendering.
If you can post that would be a great help.
thanks

Well, - attached an example (obviously without any sort of regards to style and finesse, but it gives you some data)

if i'm not wrong i remember a lion model Srek posted with a couple million hairs taking a few mins to render.
Wow!! I guess that answers my question really quick. That is incredible. I can only imagine with more work how well that would look. This project is definately feasible for the character and the hair I need. Wow!!
Thank you so much for that information. I really appreciate that. What cpu did you have? Memory?
I love the C4D community. They seem so much more laid back and friendlier than the other groups :)

Don't forget you can download the latest Cinema demo and try out Hair. Just load up your model and style away ;-)
All things considered, especially the quality, it's *extremely* fast, IMHO.
Maybe check the threads that statted when hair was announced.
There were many examples and several rendertests

In my particular case, a very basic single Pentium 4 @ 2.5 GHz and 1 GB of RAM.
As far as Srek goes, nobody ever knows what he's running, usually some monster pre-release hardware that only he and a few guys at NASA have access to....

Hi
I recently posted a little test animation here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3719385&postcount=227).
The hair is set at a super high quality - ie. 4 Hair objects of which 2 are quite small (lashes and brows) and 2 with 45000 hairs each and 90 seqments per hair. The latter 2 contains 4 materials per object. Render settings are set to the best possible settings and hence highest rendering time (with the exception of shadows being soft and not raytraced). Shadow maps are at 3000x3000 for the key light and the other 3 lights are set at 500x500. Translucency in the skin adds to the render time slightly so time per frame might be slightly better with a translucent-free skin shader.
Render time on a Duel core Athlon +3800 with 1GB of memory = appr 18min per frame.

I find hair really quick- catty had about 250,000 hairs all up, with GI and omni lights. render time(1500PIX WIDE) 35 mins on a dual G5

Not realy. The hair tests were done on a perfectly normal 3 GHz P4 with 1 GB. In the meantime i stepped up to a whooping 3.2 GHz Dual Core system ;)

Very good stuff, wow!! C4D hair makes the process feasible in render times to do a whole animation. Great new. I guess my character Flog will definately have a ton of hair. :)
