Hello guys.

I gave discreet.com a visit to learn more about gmax.

Does g-max has every modelling and mapping feature of 3dsmax 5? Are there any tools in that department that lack? If so which?

Is viewport interaction faster since the whole 3dsmax tools are not involved? Or does it just boot faster. Has it any serious bugs?

In which formats can I export my model for further use in other apps?

Would very appreciate any views. THx. :)

No. gMax is based on R4. It has most modelling features of 3ds max 4 except NURBS. It does NOT have the advanced EPoly tools and UVW Unwrap of max 5. I could imagine a newer version of gMax might appear later based on the max 5 toolset.

Export is completely dependent on 3rd party (game developers') gamepacks. Normally, you cannot export anything. No 3DS. Not even via MAXScript.
Actually, my biggest disappointment is the limited MAXScript support for file output. You cannot even save a bitmap (because someone could manage to write an exporter via bitmap saving... ;))

For more insider info, go to the gMax support forum. It is NOT sponsored by Discreet, but is very professional!

Thx Bobo you saved me 19 mb download time and a lot of trial and error. That sounded strange anyway. I mean giving away half the software for free...

I didn't mean it negatively. gMax provides great value for its money (as it costs nothing) and already has more registered users than 3dsmax! It was a great move to keep the ground max always had in the gaming industry. It is very flexible as each gamepack can completely alter the UI using Flash technology to provide the right tools for a specific game.
But it is NOT max 5 :)

I have v1.1 (1.2 is the latest) installed and use it as a light version of max on my slower internet machine when answering script-related questions...

Hi
Bobo , or anyone, I looked at the web site that has GMAX on it and I noted it was used for some Architectural work, I hadn't downloaded it yet but was curious, I am in a CAD course using Autocad2000 and have sort of jumped ahead but they wont let us touch VIZ4 yet until further down in a later quarter. My thinking was can GMAX import .dxf or .dwg files? if so could GMAX be used by myself and other students as a tool to play with now to get our feet wet while we wait to get into our viz class? if it does import these files, can the model be rendered from GMAX as well?. saved?

Just thought Id ask before that long download time :)

Hi,

Yes, you can import .DXF (and .3DS) in gMax.
So you can play with some models, but you cannot render since gMax has no renderer at all.
The rest of the program is very close to VIZ4 (both are based on the max 4 toolset), so it is a good idea to use gMax at home.

Thanks Bobo

And also, thanks for all the scripts and efforts you have devoted over the years to make life for us end users a bit more easier.
