They can be done on any medium.
If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing, unless is it an integral part of the challenge.
You can post an entry at anytime for the topic presented on this thead BEFORE the voting thread for THE WEEK has been posted.
The artist also has to post total length of time it took and program used.
Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.

I surprised myself by managing to do this picture in 10 minutes in Photoshop without using any references. 10 minutes is a very short time!

Well, they are. 10 mins is difficult, too. 12(-13?) mins with a tablet and the little shop of photos. Shrunk it down slightly more than I intended.

what's hard is doing a sketch in 10 minutes.

Nope. It's not hard. What everybody is doing is speed painting. Your sketch took you 5 minutes not even and is that black outline behind the rams. That is a sketch. It's hard to do a decent speedpainting in 10 min, true.

Just a good example is BigRedLump's entry. Only 8 minutes. Why? Because it's a sketch.

Why don't everybody do sketches then? Because some people put speedpaintings in there, and get the votes. My first entry ever was a sketch, and nobody cared. Since then I do like everybody else, speedpainting. (Even though it's true the only time I ever won a DSG, it WAS with a sketch. But there were only 3 entries, too)

"A sketch is a rapidly executed freehand drawing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drawing) that is not intended as a finished work, often consisting of a multitude of overlapping lines. Sketches usually serve to quickly record ideas for later use. "

Says wikipedia.

So either the DSF becomes the daily speedpainting forum, or we do sketches.

I hope you all see my point :P

Anyway, after my first entry that was a sketch, here's some speedpainting to make everybody happy:

It's hard to loose someone you love.

cmon may lea ..dont take this too seriously ... we dont do sketches here to get votes, we sketch because its fun and practice:thumbsup:

and in that point i disagree with you "speedpaints" are nothing else but sketches

Far be it from me to argue with the all-encompassing and frequently unreliable knowledge provided by Wikipedia (because, indeed, I agree with your post completely, if only in essence), but I think the nature of a digital sketch has evolved somewhat. A broad assumption I'm making is that most of us work digitally - after all, this is *CG* Talk. A quick glance at the speed paints thread will confirm this, and from my on and off visits and contributions to the DSG, I suspect it is the same for most people here.
In my mind, most of the speed paintings, even the ones that stun me with the skill and talent collected on their tiny pixel canvases, are still incomplete representations of the artists' intentions. If they were not done at speed, then no doubt many of them would be different.

Regardless, a sketch is a sketch, you're right. Nevertheless, I don't like to think of the work in the DSG as speed painting. That's because the tools most of us use do not conform to conventional approaches to 'sketching'. I think the term has mutated somewhat in this area, and it's not a bad thing. The DSG is a great place to hone ALL aspects of your craft, especially if you favour a digital workflow.
To me, this is digital sketching - you need only contrast these pieces to 'complete' digital works to see that they conform to many of the ideas you outlined.

As a matter of interest, and for those who are pedantic when it comes to language (like I am), thefreedictionary.com thinks that a sketch constitutes:

1. A hasty or undetailed drawing or painting often made as a preliminary study.

I like thefreedictionary.com because it adapts panel judgement when definitions are unclear, so users are able to see what most people understand a certain term to mean. Err. Yeah. Back to sketching/painting/digitally-inputting-visual-data.

Rawwad, that's pretty awesome for 10 mins. Is it PS or Painter? (at a glance it looks like a Painter job - if not, extra kudos to you for building up such a natural free-flowing feel to it so quickly :))

What I just want to say is. Just take the sketches of the week. Imagine you've never seen these pics before, and that you don't know in which context they've been painted. Would you ever say they're sketches? Honestly? (Especially the no time limits one) (If these are sketches, I'd love to see what they look like when turned into a full painting)

Oh well just call me jealous if you want :P

Hehe, you hit the nail on the head - because what I'm saying is that some of the demigods that frequent these forums can bolt out things in half and hour that would take mere mortals hours, a day, two days, a week. It's the same as if you go to any art class in the world...some people will just be better than others at certain things. Certainly some people are better at sketching in the real world, so why not here? Take a look at the sketches of the week, yes, and then put them in context by comparing them to the CG Award winners. That's when you have the standard set in such a way as to appreciate them as sketches.

/end boringness ^_^;;

There isn't meant to be any ill-will, it's just a friendly discussion :)

Alrighty I'm probably just terribly jealous. I know I'm medium in everything and I'll never be more that just medium... I just wish I was good at one thing at least, so I can get a job... Sorry for the rant really. It's just... Hard to fail...

I'm sorry everyone... It has been quite some time since I've done a daily sketch, and when I used to do them you had that full day to produce something and could choose your own size... I guess some things change when you're away. Again, sorry for that and will pay attention to the "rules" from here on out....

Great sketches by the way...

Thanks Jimi :) It´s done in painterIX, but I have only trial version. I must say that is great program, not good as PS for me, but love many styles and random traditional brushes there. :) You think it´s quick, 10min is enought time, and painter is pretty fast :D

My attempt, 10 mins (9 for this sketch, I started one before but killed it), single layer in PS. I wish I had a clearer idea before starting. I wonder which is harder, his head or that wall-type thing?
