View Full Version : How to make chainmail?
Stickman116 07-20-2006, 06:40 AM Hi, just wondering if anyone can give me tips on making chainmail. Do I do this in the modeling or texturing phase? Any techniques or tutorials? Thanks.

Only you can answer that. Why? because you haven't told us what resolution you will be rendering at, or what your realism / style requirements are. If you will be doing closeups, and are going for realism, then you may consider a modelled approach. If not, and your model won't appear to closely then you'd be better going with a texture.

Sorry for my vague question. I am going to need to go pretty close to the model (close-mid shots and wideshots mostly). Realism level will probably be aimed for something like The Incredibles or pre rendered scenes seen in Final Fantasy games. Thanks for any help or leads in the right direction.

for mid level detail a displacement map might be the answer
here I've modelled the rings in 3dsmax,then rendered them as a depth map that is used as displacement.
transparency, color, bump & displacement are used here
the image on the left is of a single polygon

Ahhhh... thanks for that reply, it hit the spot. How would you render a model as a displacement and bump map in Alias Maya 7?

I don't know what it may be called in Maya, but your basically looking at a z-depth pass. Another way to achieve it could be to add a gradient from the furthest side (black) to the nearest (white) and it should pretty much do the job aswell.

I found it in the render settings for the camera, under enable z-depth. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
