I have a model that I need to smooth but I have parts of it that I need to keep well defined. I have tried maxing out the weight on the vertexs in question but it still screws it up. Any ideas? thanks.

I'm in the learning stages, but try out an editable poly. There you can select the faces/polys you want to meshsmooth. That should do the trick.

In your stack:
Rightclick "editable mesh"
Collapse to ediable poly

hope it helps!

Look into smoothing groups in your help file (f1 while max is running). I would need to see a pic, but you could assign different smoothing group #'s for the areas, and then apply a meshsmooth with the option for smoothing groups checked. Just 1 solution, there are other ways as well.
If smoothing groups aren't what you are looking for, then you will need to add geometry to your mesh, denser areas will retain crispness.

Just a note about the method you were using: weighting may cause some distorion in your mesh, if it has a reflective surface, the distortion will be noticable.
