PolygonGoon 07-19-2006, 04:16 PM Hey guys, I am curious are there any Tutorials on how to make realistic Car paint. I am Didaly Dadaling with the Maya Car paint but cant seem to quite get it. Any info on this or making other shaders?
Here is my car: Not done yet, but i want to do a test render.

Just to clarify, do you mean metalic flake paint? I assume you do - if so check out this link http://www.darksim.com/html/simbiont.html - this is a plug in for maya and many other 3d apps and they have an excellent metalic paint shader you can down load for free. I used it with 3d studio max and it gave a really good render. There are a lot of other shaders there too. I haven't used maya car paint yet as I'm very new to maya, but if it gives poor results have you considered making your own layered texture to simulated the effect? you could probably do it pretty easily with about 4 layers, using a ramp shader to create a fresnel effect on the middle layers that contain the metalic flakes combined with env chrome for a reflection map and a phong E for the top glossy layer - just off the top of my head. I couldn't get your link to work to see what you currently have but when you get it sorted out post a pic! :thumbsup:
