View Full Version : Attaching 2 arms and a head to a boned body
Hi there again! I have another question! Its like this, i have a body with 2 legs and a shield at its back and ive placed bones in both legs. Now i also have 2 arms, again with bones but since ive modeled them seperate from the body theyre not attached. i also have a head. Now is there any way to attach those amrs plus the head to the body, so that when i make the bones in the upperbody of the bodysection move, the arms and head will move also?
i also have some extra stuff modeled to be placed on the shield, they dont need any bones but they do need to be attached to the body in order to be moved as i move the bone in the body.
thanks in advance and i really hope there is a way for this!

Should be doable. First, I'd reset all the bones and disable deformers (orange button lower left). Then put all the body parts in a null and use Function-->Connect to make them a single mesh object. Drag the bone chains under the new object and arrange the bone chains the way you want them, e.g., parent arm bones to chest bone, leg bones to pelvis, etc. Reset bones and enable deformers. Cross your fingers and test it out.
gonna be doin just that! Tnx loads , hope it works! To be continued! :buttrock: :applause:
tried it and well, it works in the way that i finally have a connectoed character, but i have some problems with the vertex weight selections i made. When i insert the vertex weights for the body model in the new connected one, theres no problem, the selections are still the same as before, but when i then insert the selections i made for the arm, it doesnt select the arm, but it selects a weird part of the body. Does this mean that i have to make new selections for my arms? Or is there an easier way around...*crosses fingers*
tnx again btw!

Yeah, I think you will have to redo the vertex maps. :surprised
alrighty then! Tnx again!

Drag the arm chain under one of the bones in the spine chain. Here's one example:

tnx loads!! Its finally workin the way it should work! Really Thanx!!

Ok this is the last thing ill ask about it i promise, but what i noticed was that after i connected the arms and the head to the body, the hypernurb object didnt work as before, now it doesnt really smooth it, plus it looks like its a lot more for my comp to take, it really slows down my pc a lot. Would u happen to know what causes this to happen? Is there anything that can be done about it?
Thanx again again!

You might have stumped me this time. Just to be sure, though, did you remember to delete the original objects that were left behind when you connected the various body parts?
yep, i deleted the old bodyparts, as a matter of fact, i copied the new connected object to a new file (as welll as all the bones etc)
I can see that the hypernurb is trying to smooth it, it just looks a lot less smooth then before i connected the parts

I got it. You're in XL7, right? You need to add a smoothing tag to the new object. In R8 a smoothing (Phong) tag is created automatically when you connect objects, but not in XL7.
damn!! U are the man did u know that?
Thanx loads!! U rock! :buttrock:
alrighty then...i hope my animating it will be going smoothly..but otherwise im afraid i will have to bother u again if u dont mind!
Thanx again !

Always happy to help if I can, and if I therefore rock, so be it! ;) But just between you an me (and everyone else on this forum), I'm not the greatest animator. Working on it, but still a long ways to go....
