I decided to turn this piece, that started as a rough doodle of her as she was reading, into a proper painting that I could frame and give as a birthday present. Now I know I don't have the talent to put my work in the finished showcase forums, but I would like to show the stages that led to this final piece here a) because I would love feedback on everything (the process of working, anatomy, technique etc...) and b) because I'm always interested to see other peoples progress so I thought I'd share.
Here is the, very rough, original doodle that I altered slightly in photoshop for some reason.

Painting directly over this in a new layer in Photoshop, I came up with a pallette and roughly applied the colour.

Began work on the features of the face.

Not at all happy with the colours at this point, I altered the levels a bit and played with some layer styles until I found a colour scheme that didn't make her look like a corpse! I then moved to Painter IX and began to apply more highlights and smooth the skin.

Began work on the hair in Painter IX, mainly using different types of pallette knives for a smeary finish, and touching up with the artists oils brushes.

Finally, I made some minor changes to the whole face, repositioned the nearest eye slightly and finished work on the hair. I also made a pale pink background a crude scribble around the portrait with a large, low opacity brush to make it look a bit more interesting than the plain white background. Et voila:

Sorry if this post was too large! I now consider this to be finished, but any comments/crits would be very welcome. If any of the images don't appear, just right click and select "Show Image".
