View Full Version : Charater: Joe and the girls
stuf123 01-19-2003, 07:18 AM Here is a quick drawing I did for my roommate. These are some of his characters from his online comic strip. This was all done with Painter and a Wacom tablet. C&C are very welcome. Hope you enjoy.

Nice style... but are the guys hands really supposed to sit on the girls butts? Not only is he clearly grabbing the right gal's butt, but the left one seems to sit in his hand as well... That makes it unclear for the viewer to say whether he's the girl's friend or just some groping jerk. In most comic book aesthetics, you want to have a clear visual idea of the characters' relationships, especially when they're allies.
If its just a sexism thing, well.... I'm all for sexism as long as it's mutual... so if the girls groped at the guy in a similar fashion or if the image clearly signalled that the girls were capable of whooping his butt for groping at them, it would be a cooler image with a clearer message that these gals weren't just playmate bimbos.

You know, if some 17 year old with an attitude problem can't read, I couldn't care less. If you actually read my post, you'd see I complimented the author of the pic. My main crit about it was that the relationship between the characters seems unclear, but that may not even be important to the guy who drew it in the first place. Bottom line: If you can't discuss properly without blaring insults around you in any language, there are other forums for people like you.

Or he can't take crit for something he hasn't done. :P hehe
Just let him draw the pic the way he likes. I would probably agree that the relationship between the characters could be explained, with text or in some other way. But that will probably come forth in the comic later on?
Could you post some links to these forums that people like me use? Clearly Cg Art is only for oldies...Near death grumpy old men.

FLOW - Yeah, at 29 I'm surely 'near death'...
Since you seem to be a really mature young man you could probably futher develop your insulting skills at http://chat.aftonbladet.se cos we have no use for them here.
And besides, being a 'near death' old game developer since -98 I have recruited quite a few young artists to the companies I've worked at. Since you seem to be a "wannabe" leveldesigner you might want to know that your attitude won't work in a professional environment where you're supposed to respect not only your male coworkers. But hey, concentrate on graduating highschool first.
thats too bad...my life is over, I suck...oh well, the picture at the top of this page is nice!
I checked out that link you posted. Wow, theres alot of cool people there man! Thanks! :buttrock:
I don't want in on this argument by any means but I think that the expression on the characters faces explains it all. He's obviously a type of ladies man and He's obviously gropinbg them both.

It would be a sad day indeed if every artist began to fall into a strict regime of political correctness so I think that comment really, REALLY needs a 'my personal opinion and preferences feel' prefix.
Even so, I think the comment comes across as a crit for the sake of being PC rather than for the benefit of the artist.
I, personally, think it's great that we don't know what is going to happen next. It looks to me like the girl on the left is his girlfriend and he is a 'jack the lad' that is taking the opportunity to grope the other girl while his girlfriend isn't looking. Whether the girl on the right knows him, is going to slap him or is going to give him a sexy smile is unknown to us and I think adds to the image.
Great work!

All I did was draw a picture (sniff) ...just a picture (sniff)
First off I want to thank everyone for the kind words. This picture was drawn for my roommates website as a fan art for his fan. This comic has been goign on for 5 years and has a lot of history and story behind it that can't be explained in one picture. The characters in the piece are in fact all sex craving whores. I was almost ammused at the fact that you guys tryed to figure out what was going on in the piece and for that I salute you! Here are a few links to look at that might explain it.

Sorry for any arguments this might have caused, I was just trying to draw a cool pic!
C&C are still very welcome.

Oops, I though all C&C was about personal opinion and preference... Sorry mate!
We all have different reactions to images. I felt this drawing was made to portray comic book characters in a way that you could tell their relationship. SO, if I can't tell the girls are a) hero allies, b) sidekicks, or c) brainless bimbos then I believe its a problem that has nothing to do with being PC. Its a matter of conveying their roles as comic characters.
Then again, I'm just tired of bimbos. And for some strange reason I believe the tiny, tiny minority of female CG professionals are, too. You know, there are reasons as to why they are few... But that discussion belongs in some other thread.
One question to the artist though, is the left girl sleeping or 'under the influence'? She seems to be falling if he didn't hold her up. Again, nice style to the lines, very clear.
Have a nice monday folks

stuf123: no matter what anyone says, your art is very stylized, and I love it.
flow: no matter what you say, you need to stop acting this way, and be professional. this site is for MATURE people, and is not here for people to insult other people.
moroten: i understand what you are saying about the groping, but the art is already complete, so i think it is final. you know these kids will never grow up until the real world slaps them in the face when they try to get a job with that attitude.
oh well, good day all, and lets stop the flame war. thanks.
mature, is that to act the way that you feel comfortable or is it to shut up and do what everybody else is doing?
well if it's the second thing then I guess I'll go out and take a smoke, all the cool guys are. I dont want to be different or childish :hmm:

Hey moroten,
I do agree with you that a lot of woman are shown as bimbos in a lot of things. But the artwork and story line I am drawing from is FILLED with very self impowered woman who can hold their own. I picked this subject matter because Joe (the guy in the middle) is one of my favorite characters in the strip. And his big character flaw is that he is a male shovenistic pig. And in the story he gets paired up with 5 girls that are just like him. Kind of like on of those "I can't belive that that can happen" kinda things. I really don't want anyone to be mad. That wasn't my purpase at all. I'm not sure what I can say or do to make things any better. I just worked with the material I was given.
Oh, and she is not drunk, just leaning on him. :)

stuf123 - I looked around at your site at the comic stuff and liked what I saw a lot. Never meant any disrespect. You have a very talented style going and it's obvious you've done a lot of cartooning. I hope this discussion didn't ruin your thread totally.
Salute,

Daniel - No need to apoligize. If anything if got more people to see my stuff. :) By the way, LOVED the Ice Egg animation. It made it into my "good animations" folder. And that is a hard thing to do. Let me know when your site is up and running. Would love to see more of your work.
