Stupid question, but I need answers fast as I cant seem to find a resolution to this:

Havent used After Effects in a long while, but need to edit som shots along with the sound so they are in Sync. I import .mp3 files into the timeline and I cant figure out how to edit where I can set keys to make silent and make louder excetra. Secondly, I remember I was able to just scroll through the timeline by draggin my mouse and be able to hear a sramble of the sound when I move it back and forth, now I hear nothing, and even when I hit space bar, I hear nothing.

What am I missing to hear and edit the sound without having to render it out or RAM preview??

I know there is a way as I use to be able to do it, its just been so long.. Please help if someone knows the answer as I have to get this done by tonight. Thanks

Do not use mp3 in After Effects or for editing in general. Do a search if you are interested in the reasons, it has been covered a million times before.

For a sound preview hit the 'Del' key on the NumPad.

I tried using other formats,

wav quicktime, etc.

Im looking to edit the sound, all the del key on the number lock does is play it. How do I edit it in realtime in AE so I can sink it with my images??

im using uncompresses wav files now with no luck. Please help??

You can't edit in realtime in AfterEffects, because you always have to render into RAM first.
It's a composting app, not an editing program, just not made for what yo ask for, that simple.

As mentioned AE will not edit realtime.

In order to sync a sound layer with images, add timeline markers at the desired image positions.
Then preview audio (numpad DEL) and as you listen, keep hitting numpad * at desired the audio positions, or in the audio layer hit LL (it wil reveal waveform) and you can see+ adjust it visually.
Then split audio layer as many times at the marker positions, trim and reposition them to match video.

you CAN scrub audio in AfterEffects - but it is by far the crappiest sound scrubber EVER. To do this hold down the CTRL key while moving the time indicator on your timeline (yuck).

As stated in previous posts: Hitting the period key (DEL) on your number keypad will also RAM preview the audio. Use the layer markers to mark (asterisk *) where you want your animation to happen.

I have always found that AfterEffects works best with AIFF files for sound. WAV, QT, MP3 and other formats will occasionally give you errors.

What you could do is bring in your sound and use the trapcode plug-in SoundKeys to create specific keyframes to animate to - that may or may not help.

A lot of editors like to use SoundtrackPro or similar sound editiors to synch up the sound to the video. You could try that if you have time.

Hope this has helped - good luck with your video.

Also there is another plug-in that lets you edits in a very nearly real-time way:
