View Full Version : Nude Actress (WIP)
Ariel 01-19-2003, 04:35 AM Here's a model I've been working on for the last 2 weeks. It's based on a student actress from my college. Parts of her body will be replaced with CG, so i decided instead of doing separate parts, to do the entire body, which would look better on a portfolio.
I'm sorry I can't show the reference images we shot because I am not allowed, but if anyone wants to comment on the anatomy, etc please do so. I've had some dificulties, with the knees her back and scapulas, and her butt, but feel free to critizice on anything that looks off. I've been too close to it for too long...

It's nice to see a female with realistic proportions in CG. I think you're off to a great start.

Very nice job Ariel, glad t osee anartist that really pays atention to the human body. So many time we see characters that are deformed and odd. And don't worry about the models reference pics. Interested in how and what you are useing the seperate body parts for, a special effects thing. Nice Job...:D also where did you get your CG schooling?

Thanks for the comments
Here's a closeup of the head. Definitely the eyelids need a lot more work, as well as the interior of the ear. Feel free to comment.

koinu: The special fx part of the project is not my responsability. It's a pretty big group that includes video-film students and compositors, fx guys, etc. I know they're using a lot of green screen shooting and Shake for compositing. The girl is supposed to come out of a tree, with the texture of the tree and all. But the tree is part real footage and part cg. Her face will be the real actress, while most of her body will be CG. It sounds complex, but If they pull it off, it could look pretty cool.
About the schooling, I go to the Savannah College of Art and Design, but to be honest the computer art department is very technical and really, I haven't learned much there. Where I really think the school has been very valuable is everytime I take a class in another department where they teach traditional stuff. Ironically, my best teachers so far have been the one that have taught me drawing, sculpting and 2d animation, not the ones that use 3d software. Anyway I'm rambling... (but you got me started) :p
Floyd Bishop: Where's Icepond? The work on the site looks cool :)

Crit?! *gasp* You must be jokin'... This model is perfect!
Are you going to rig her and do some animation? That would be very interesting to see.
Pssst... Nice modeling portfolio you have. I really like that Acteon model. Tho where did his bow go? ;)

Great Job!!!
From your comments...I'd say you should work on the things you said...however, the butt looks great!!...I'm serious..it's very real.
Love the model, and last thing....everything below the knees looks to small...check the scale.

No question that you can't post reference images, but I'm wondering if you can post shots of wireframes :) While others want to quit doing 3D or shoot themselves the very least, I want to learn.
I'm also working on my own actress (and actor for that matter). It would be great to see how other people do things :)
Thanks,

Ariel,
Awesome model!! While most ppl will go ahead and tell you what they don't like, I'll tell you what I do like so you won't change it. The "bulge" right above the knee is great. Its not an ugly flub of fat, but how the thigh muscles would look being relaxed over the knee. The back and chest looks great. Somehow the lower back has a wider ridge than what I would do. But then again, you're working from a reference and that may be the case. All in all, its a phenomenal model. Keep it up. I can't wait to see it finished. You guys are truly inspirational.
Peace,

Big thanks to everyone for your comments!
DarkArcher: It's funny that you say she should go on a diet. If you saw the real person, she is pretty attractive and doesn't look that fat at all. But I guess we "idealize" all the time creating cominc book guys and girls that when we base something on reality, it is far from that ideal.
HieSpike: Even though I'm following the reference images closely I do think the lower legs look too thin. Probably because it's missing ankles and feet. I"ll rework that part a bit more.

really good!! impressive detail and perfection. by far, the only thing that bothers me is her lower legs (how do u call it?) which seem a bit too short. but... it's just off the standard... there's ppl who might have'em like that... if you are using a reference :p
great!!

The only problematic area is the back of the head, I wonder if your reference has been shot with perspective distortion? You may wish to work on that part some more. Other than that, there's not much to criticize, it's a very nice model. Good luck with the rigging :)

Hexodam "Good job!! one thing is borthering me... she should go on a diet... " Come on you must perscribe to the ideals that all women must look like those scronny runway models!
She is perfect in every aspect of the female form. I've drawn alot of figures and she would be a dream to add to any composition. For me, I like the 14th century women for they have very defined gorgious forms. Ariel: your are doing a fantastic job modeling her and the project sounds great. Thanks for letting me know about Savannah, I'm currently finishing up here at Full Sail in Orlando. If you post the vid(pocketfilms.net) please send the link to me!!!! Also Wireframes??
Peace to you and yours....

Thanks again for the kind words!
Laa-Yosh: What exactly is it about the back of the head that seems wrong? As most reference images, there's always a level of distortion, that is unavoidable unless you use a zoom lens. So there's not much I can do about that. I'm using a Sony F707 Cybershot for the reference images but I don't know how those lenses translate in terms of view angle to a regular 35 mm camera. Anyway, let me know, so I can rework the cranium a bit more.
By the way, I saw your demo reel recently, and I must say it is pretty nice. What sort of professional experience do you have? :)
koinu: I'll post some wireframes in a while.

I've messed around with your profile render a bit, though I don't have Photoshop 6 here to liquify it :)
The ear was too low, just as the lower part of the cranium. I've also tried to add a bit more mass to it, and pulled the eyes down by less then an inch. It's a bit closer to an ideal head now, but I think it still leaves enough from the original's character, while looking more lifelike - at least to me :)
Thanks about the reel :)
I actually have about 3 years of 'professional' experience by now, but I haven't really had a chance to do more realistic and high-poly stuff until winter 2001. I've worked at a game dev company, and my first project was multimedia stuff for kids; then some lowpoly; and finally some nice FMVs in the past year... That's all that I've put into the reel.

Here's a wireframe shot so far. I'm aware that there's a lot of non-quad faces in the model but at ths point my concern is more with getting the volumes and anatomy right and then to work those non-quads that look bad when the model is smoothed.
Any comments on the wireframe are appreciated.
Laa-Yosh: Thanks for the observations. I'll look into my references again and try to correct those things you mentioned. I do agree that to be "ideal", it would need those changes, but I'll only adjust that if I see it in the model. Thanks for taking the time to paint the corrections.
I know you are a true polygon wiz ;) (from your information on the site and your numerous posts on Spiraloid), so if you have comments on the wireframe, I'd like to hear them as well.
