Since springing from out of nowhere late last year, YouTube has come to hold the leading position in online video with 29 percent of the U.S. multimedia entertainment market, according to the latest weekly data from Web measurement site Hitwise."

What really geeks me out about companies like youtube and myspace is how innocent and simple the pages look, but then you think about how much processing power and bandwidth you need to process tens of millions of separate user requests. Its insane!

100 million videos a day?

... Yet again productivity takes a beating.

/Yes, I am guilty too.

I love YouTube, but... how on earth do they pay for the thing?

The scary thing is by statistics is that even if you were the 100 millionth video on YT, you'd still have 4 loyal viewers!

I don't know how they stay alive with a million dollars (and rising) of bandwidth costs per month. What's their total cap? I hears a paltry $11 million. I can't wait to see how they turn Youtube profitable, it'll be a major change to the internet if it happens.

I was always wondering about the same thing regarding Google.

Anyone know why YouTube seems to beg going so much better than GoogleVideo? I have no idea on this but wasn't Google Video outthere first?

if google advertised more of its capabilities to the public, then services like google video would probably become more popular -- but for whatever reason, YouTube reached the masses first (just speculation) and now has supremecy.

Google stays afloat and does very well in fact by selling advertisement. Not well enough to justify their stock price, but they aren't about to bubbleburst either. One interesting thing about Google is that they are the number one purchaser of computer hardware, exceeding even Dell, who SELLS computer hardware!

Their initial process in soliciting material from people was pretty cumbersome as well. I remember it taking about 3 months to hear back from then the first time I sent Google Video an animation.

I think youtube is more aimed at people making silly movies.. they even have the profiles and such. Google seems to be more just vids. Also i dunno bt i have not yet seen anybody put google video on their site, so dunno if this is possible but i have seen many youtube movies you can lick them on your own site.

I like youtube too, but it has a big disadvantage: You canīt dowload their videos, you only can stream them.
Other sites offer dl too!

youtube got in well with myspace. myspace already had huge traffic. Googlevideo still has no real connections that I can find. All the myspace kiddies love to share stupid videos and make slideshows of their friends which youtube will help out with.

i still don't know how they are making profit, and I still don't know how myspace is either. I mean are that many people clicking on dating ads?
I'm surprised also that no companies have gone after youtube for showing tv shows and movie clips..etc. I guess the clips are short enough to not violate copyright issues?

LOL, yeah, but you need special software to do that.
If you have a look at bore me (http://www.boreme.com) for example, you can directly download their vids without problems.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2dX0q7s9p4OK - I'll ask - Any reason you posted a link to a Dutch speaking video where a comedy group is doing a skit about about a talk show host laughing at someone with an injured spine?
