View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - Character - NICK
"This is one of the rare swamp races called Aelnûn (elvish for shallow lake creature) or just Swamp beast. They are known to stay below the swamp water feasting on the vegetation that grows on the swamp floor and floating algae. They live around the edges of the swamps so that they can access dry land to find shelter to sleep in, such as caves and under huge trees. They are solitary beasts and don’t like company much so can be very violent and extremely moody"
Well i'm basically modelling a swamp creature :) I will post the sketch as soon as I get access to a scanner. Anyway here’s the start of the model updates will follow very very soon. I hope you all like him.

I like the last concept best.I think you should control or tone down the teeth some however. But it all looks real good otherwise.:)

I bet he is one grumpy bastard! I know I would be with those choppers. Nice work. Is that the texture map? That certainly looks interesting.
Fetus23- thanks fetus :) your character is looking awesome, he has a kick ass expression on his face
janhath- thank you for your comment well the idea is never final the look may change there’s ages until the challenge is over and I have just started :)
lowdown- Yeah!!!!!!!!! He is a grumpy bastard :D nice smile he has eh? Well it’s not a texture map but I guess I could use bits of later for texturing. I was just doing a concept for the colour and texture scheme I wanted in Photoshop. Glad you think it’s interesting :)
I also did a small rigging test to see how well he deformed, no problems so far with the mouth deformation. I was thinking about having the top of his head also rotate as he opens his mouth unlike humans he could have a double hinge system to get those large teeth around plants and annoying people!!!!
Updates arriving soon :)

Interesting idea. I like the style of the head. I would probably suggest less defined\toned muscles on the arms though.
Good work, Nick.

really cool creature! :D
The only thing that strikes me as odd is the 3 rolled-stomach. The rolls from the back along the sides seem right, but I would think the rolls wouldn't necessarily continue to the front.
Looking great and menacing! :D
WOW this is looking so good! Very creative creature you have here, I love the teeth and the nails :) Is he going to be a blob of sorts or will he have legs? Right now he looks like he is sitting on the ground and all his fat is bunching up kinda. It doesnt really look like gravity is pulling them down. If he wont have legs this will be fine though.

I like this very much, That's a really original one! :) keep it up

hey guys :) updates very soon within teh next 2 days sometimes!
mtmckinley- Thanks for the great crit. yeah i havent touched teh stomach in a while i wanted to get the whole model sorted before i fixed that easier to build it symmetrical then mess it up and adding bumps and uneveness to his stomach.
Rye- thats what im having trouble with, my first design ideas had him with legs sort of tree trunk legs like an elephant and rhino cross, then thought it may be cool to just have him drag himself about with those huge hands and powerful arms :) as i replied to mtmckinley i have still to tackle the stomach area. Thanks for commenting :)
ila_solomon- im glad you like him, just trying to be as original as i can on this one. thanks !!

Oh yeah update tonite :) so stay tuned
Ok update is a little late :hmm: but its here now :) whats ya people think?

Oh yeah check my new site out when ya have the time.
www.niko3d.co.uk (http://www.niko3d.co.uk)
love it! but i have a crit, perhaps u scould make the arms less muscular and more "just big" as in, fat big. This is becoz the creature itself is pretty fat and not very muscular.
I really like this one!
53Hey guys and gals :) just did some texturing and lighting tests. this is what i have so far. I have 3 main spot lights one for the main key light, a rim light and a bounce light from the grass. The ambient/fake gi is created using a hemisphere of spotlights.
Textures are created using just weightmaps, gradients and procedurals, i will add finer details with image maps for the next update as soon as!!!
Comments are more then welcome :)
One thing i would love to get feedback on is if he makes you cringe or say ewwwwww when you see him.

good texture work, but the only part that is not good enough is stomach/belly, probably you know, & i don't know how to explain the matter! :) it's still unfinished, yeah?
Heres another update of the texture. Front and back views. :bounce: he has a big bouncy ass.
Still very work in progress, hopefully my machine will handle this guy with radiosity instead of the spotlight array i have.
Critique is more then welcome.

loganarts- hey loggie glad you like my beast man :) Updates arriving soon. Im gonna rig the beast so i can pose him :) next. well as soon as i finish the textures.
Ok heres 2 new updates. i did somemore texture tweaking starting working on the enviroment. I still have some texturing to finish, the model is posed with morph tho i still may rig him. Some post work on colours and a little depth blurring.
Anyway heres the images :) back to work i go :wip:

Definately one of the best so far.

Really nice!...I like that enviroment and the viewpoint you have...Geat model To!!...My only suggestion would be to make a morph for the lips so they can close over those massive teeth or even a morph for a smile......might look cool and add some more personality.. Keep up the good work NICK!!!
 If that thing bobbed up out of the swamp, I'd batch myself... Those horrible teeth and talons! :bounce: Great creation, Nick.
One thing I'd add if you're considering changes at this stage - dirty up his bottom. If he drags himself about on his bum, it would get real mucky.
