Hello

My name is Ernesto Esteso, and I've decided to compile the animations I did while I was studying at Animation Mentor, into a reel

In order to view the reel, you need Quicktime 7 (I compressed the video with H264 Codec)

Animation Reel -11,7 Mb (http://www.ernestoesteso.com/videos/Reel.mov)

Any comments or critics you want to tell me, is welcome :)

Thanks!!!

Yup Ernestooooo,

this is a great reel, but I already know what you're capable of...
The acting shots are superb. My only suggestion is to keep the Ballie walk cycle (vanilla one) all in one spot and show them from side/front/persp.

HI Ernesto!!! GREAT reel!!! But only one thing, in the sad walk cycle... I think that this animation doesn´t need overlap in the foots. This is only a little opinion without importance.
GREAT reel, very fresh and with a impressive acting. See you tomorrow in the office.

That is great Ernesto,

Acting and motion really impressive.

Could you tell as more about progress of this work.
I'm just about to switch form architecture to do my first steps in animation.
If you could share some technical and creative aspects I will be glad. What software did you use? How did you develop all this motions? Did you use any libraries or footage ?

Good job man.
Cheers

hi Ernesto....good stuff there dude. I specially like the first acting, I think is your best piece. Nice facial animation too, I like the expresions you got. You should cut off the last shot, is not as hight quality as the rest of the reel. Anyway very good work man!!...see you tomorrow at work, he he...4 stars from me. Keep working like that!!

Ernesto! Great reel!! You've got some really sweet acting pieces in here.

My only comment would be to take out a few things.... You've got a lot of good stuff in there, but there's a quote from someone.... "Your only as strong as your weakest piece". So you want to make sure that everything you have on there is SUPER strong.

I would cut most of the ballie stuff and the 1 legged jump. The 1 legged jump is very basic & feels like filler, you obviously have a good handle on body mechanics from the other stuff you have on there (like the jump at the very end, you don't need 2 jumps). The ballie walk is good to have in there once, but it feels like it drags on at the moment, like you did a LOT of work with the ballie guy, and we're seeing ALL of it. I think the happy one that you have first is the best, cut the others.

The wave after the box push I would cut. It arms feel kinda-floaty on the walk in the second half.

I would also cut the coffee dialogue piece. It doesn't feel as polished and finished as the other dialogue pieces on there.

I love your second to last piece. The super cartoony style works so well in that one. I personally think it would be a stronger one to end on than the jump that you have at the very end now.

I also love the 2 stewie piece, that's priceless! So clear with NO dialouge!

Hope this helps :)

Thanks again, for your kind words, guys!!!

Alison, you are absolutely right with some of your comments. I never thought in those things. Thanks a lot, it's probably that I'll make some changes to my reel, following your advices

MartinDay, the software I used is Maya, because the models of Animation Mentor, are only available in this program. But I can swear you, that the software it's not important. I don't have any spacial secrets, or a different workflow than anybody. For the majority of my animations, I'll try to follow this way:

1- Think in the idea I want to transmit with my animation, and develop all the possibilities.
2- Make some drawings (thumbnails), to have a better idea of what I'm searching for my poses.
3- Once I had my ideas clear, then I usually recorded myself, in order to see the correct timing, or the best poses.
4- Then, I put my poses, and I start to distribute them to obtain a good timing and spacing
5-Once I have all my poses (usually in stepped mode), I start to transform my curves to spline mode, and I start to polish my animation.

Something that I think it's vital, in all this process, is to obtain feedback from someone. Because I think that to have the opinion and "the eyes", from the other people, can give you others ways to confront your animations.

And of course, a lot of hard work, and a huge passion of what you are doing ;)

Hey Shenmue, don't make me laugh :D ................The Pixar animators are gods, and I'm only a simple mortal..........I have to work much, much more

Thanks again to all the people that have seen my reel. I'm glad that you enjoyed it

Hi Ernesto, very nice reel!

Overall I think it's consistently great. However there are a few areas where I think can need just a tiny bit more polishing:

1.) The second piece towards the end: "I said I was going to tell you the truth." The eyebrows are very "swimmy" to me.

2.) Your third piece: I love the animation but I am not sure what is going on: are they argueing? I know he is insulted at the end, but I just don't know why he is insulted.

3.) Your forth animation (cell phone): again, nice animation but the response at the end is not clear. At first it seems like the phone wan't working, but then he reads a text message that insults him?

4.) The coffee girl: I think it's good, but your other dialogue clips are better: I don't think this piece adds anything significant to your reel, which is fantastic.

5.) The dejected/defeated walk seems floaty to me, esp in the hips. I like the reaction and anticipation going into the walk though.

Good luck with everything: I know you'll rock!

Hey Vilen13, thanks for your comment. Your reel is the best I saw in a long time

What's up ,Jeff!!. Thanks a lot for your response. I see, that you've posted, some good points. In the third animation, there's no real story behind it. The purpose of the assignment was to make the character to go through 4 emotional changes, so, that's the better idea I had at that moment ......... :D

Uncle-Ox, thanks for your comments. I worked very hard the hands animation, because i think that is one of the hardest part of the animation. I'm glad that you enjoyed it :)

Gashina, thanks a lot for your kind words :)

hey, awesome reel man, i especially like the first scene...best animation reel ive seen. Im a new student to the world of cg trying to figure out what path to take...modelling, animating etc. But your reel has made me want to do animation. Thanks for the inspiration. Also, with the audio from the first scene, did you record that or is that off a movie or something, if so, what movie ?

Hey Ernesto, Sorry took me so long to post. Sweet reel. I do agree that the coffee anim isn't as strong as your other dialogs, but still pretty fun to watch. Anyways, good luck. I can't wait to see more from you. :)
