View Full Version : hair in blender
thondal 07-16-2006, 12:02 AM The emitter thing is it good to make realistic hair (if i really use some time tweaking it?)
or is it still better to use polygonhair? like with a hair texture and bump map or something on it?

It's been a long while since I made hair in Blender, but from what I read and see elsewhere, if you are kind of new to making hair the "emiter thing" gives you more bang for your money.
If you are a pro making poligon-shaded hair, then you should seriously consider mixing both techniques.

just thinking. Because I see, that all other people using, maya/3dsmax wich have hair plugins and stuff, they work pretty well....
Been trying out a bit with the emitter, but not quite pulled it off yet.

Have you seen that "Make Hair" thing?

sorry for putting this under the hair thread, but I though I'd post it here, instead of makinga new thread. Just wondering. Like in max and maya there are these counters thingies. Like when you are competing in a low poly competition you can make a "budget". Say your scene isn't allowed more then 700 polys, then you have a counter that keep the count :P
Is there a similar thing in blender? If not.. is there a script for it?
-thondal-
thondal: yep, blender has a built in counter, in the top right corner it will tell you number of verts faces edges ect.

You are probably going to have to get into paths and weight painting if you want to do it with particle strands. A very amazing technique I recently discovered is to create "plane" hair and texture it. You can acheive just plain amazing results with it that are easy to render.

Yes, i was aware of that... but I'm currently waiting for my blender 2.3 manual, and i'm hoping that's gonna help me alot. But I have recently tried out alpha maps and that works very good.

What's "plane" hair?

"plane hair" is when you have a basic plane, and add an alpha image of black and white on it, and then turn on so that all the white or black becomes invisible ( i say black or white, because i just cannot remember what is doing what:P) hope that helps.. if not, i did a really quick tut on it.. check it out here... sorry for my english...

I like the book, but frankly you may be disappointed in what it has in regards to hair. The current version with all the new particle features wasn't available when the book was published.
I'd suggest looking for towards the online sources such as the blender wiki for up to date information on particles.
http://mediawiki.blender.org
and hair in particular.

2.3? I don't think it even has tangent shading for hair or weight painting.

I wasn't thinking of the manual helping me with the hair... just hoping it will help me at all :P

Thanks for the info on plane hair. I believe that is the way the fur was done for the characters of the first Ice Age film.
Question. In blender, how dose one get the alpha map to clip the shadows. The grass tutorial above didn't explain how to set up the way shadows are cast.
Thanks

What grass tutorial?

In Thondal's video he makes grass..... or at least it could be used for grass.
Anyway, here is a test I made with plane fur. It looks kind of mangy in spots, but that could be fixed with more planes.
