View Full Version : V A H N 's Sketches
I wanted to start a sketchbook a long time ago.. well I begin now :) :
07-15-2006, 05:12 PM
Cool, Vahn, you're started a thread. Great images...particulary the second one :)
07-15-2006, 05:15 PM
Definitely subscribing. I like the boldness of your style and your use of colour and texture (it was a couple of sketches for the DSG that had drawn my attention already).
It would be nice to see a few brief comments from you along with each image, by the way. :)
danielh68: yeah your great collection kinda pushed me over the edge to make one myself :D
eilidh: Ill write some comments in the future ...but just for you :)
just did this for the birthday of a friend. His nickname is "turtle" :)
tired to work cleaner and mostly with the round hard brush:

the tortoise is so cool !in the hot summer ,coke is the necessary element^v^
07-19-2006, 01:59 AM
Really like your 2nd sketch in particular ~ I think you're definitely improving! The thing I like about your work is the humor ~ glad to see that's still intact! :)
good stuff Vahn i really like your texturing, your style reminds me of Ralph Steadman raw and fun
07-19-2006, 05:47 AM
I've always been envious of people who can throw such awesome textures into a sketch, and make something like this really fast. I like the second one the most, good stuff, keep it up.
Love the second sketch and the turtle looks cool too!
You have a very unique style, very good use of your palet..
I'll be lurking here for more!
Rebecca: thank you
xott: hehe ty :D
srsizzy: thx ... I just cant work slow, what isnt good sometimes :(
MVDB: ahh its you ... u got a new nick :) thx m8
here a sketch from todays dsg. I like the bg but the characters are bad. They arent painted well and oversharpened
07-19-2006, 06:35 PM
Vahn, it's great to see you doing a sketch book! Bout time. I love the turtle for your firend, cracks me up. As far as the treasure hunter goes, I think the sharpness and painting on the characters are fine, just the composition is a little confusing to the eye. Love the background too
07-20-2006, 07:10 AM
that last one's great.
dunno if it was meant to be funny, cause after looking at it for a second it seems like a sad scene
but it just makes me giggle
07-20-2006, 10:28 AM
Like this last one! The background is great -- what I love most is the reflections at the front, so minimally put together, and so effectively.
I wouldn't have thought the characters were oversharpened had you not mentioned it. Do you actually use the sharpen tool? It almost seems that way. I happen to like the effect, though.
07-20-2006, 10:33 AM
I really, really like that last one! It has a great mood, perfect beach atmosphere. :buttrock:
heheee thx for the feedback guys :D
im wont be posting for a month...mhhm holidays...hooraaay. So as Bob Ross would say:

haha :buttrock:thx vahn, good result.
09-10-2006, 03:26 PM
It's great seeing you work on some landscapes and backgrounds, Vahn, they've all got a lot of energy and a wonderful sense of light and atmosphere. Keep working on those... and maybe think about combining backgrounds with your characters! All of your character images use rather simple backdrops, so how about trying to incorporate some more characters into scenes. (You tried it in that one beach pic, but as you noted, the characters might be a bit oversharpened.) :)
But anyhow, love the work so far...
audit-vahn collab | my version :)
thanks audit
walrus: thanks walrus ... i need to do some more finished pieces where i have both: characters & landscapes, but i have to find a suitable image language for me first :)
09-14-2006, 07:29 PM
The last image is very cool. Very strange environment and ships. Also, like the complimentary color scheme...oh yeah...and the strong diagonals too :)
dh: thanks m8
heres a quick color study ( not anatomy! ) :

10-31-2006, 01:49 AM
Great work, Vahn. :)
So is that Charles Baudelaire or Poe?
hehe dh, no ist a romantic german poet called joseph v. eichendorff :argh:
i have to do the whole thing in 2 colors only and simplify some more. Also i have to get rid of the quill and find some modern metaphor for the poet. Ill post a new version soon :)
heres a new approach :
tomorrow ill make him a rapper :)

Hey Vahn the last one is really nice!
love the water
maybe that light from the upper left could create even more atmosphere if the background was a lil darker...
keep 'em coming this is lovely!

I love the humble and curious impressions on the faces of the orc creatures,,,:D

Very cool, Vahn. She is nasty...excellent job!
01-13-2007, 05:47 PM
How is it possible?! I've lost all these beautiful pics for months!
You are bravissimo ! I especially admire your style and your palatte. You manage colors so easily !
01-13-2007, 07:52 PM
i subscribed....i like what i see here specially on the last pages:twisted:
"villain" from the dsg:
Serena: hoooraaaay thx
Arlekin: cheers m8 :D
01-16-2007, 07:42 AM
Oh yes, you manage colors so well...
tell me...how long did it take you?
hadn't discovered this sketchbook of yours. I think you know that I love your graphical style from the DSG.
Excellent work... keep it coming...
01-17-2007, 06:13 AM
Vahn, do you have any videos that you've made of you doing your sketches? I'd love to see something like that.
serena: the villain or managing colors ? :) well the villain sketch about 30mins, and choosing colors...hmmmm .. its not really something i really learned i just feel whats working and whats not ... maybe i learned subconsciously by watching many many artworks :D
Mu : hehe thx m8 :) well that comes from hiding in the anatomy section :P
aldog: so far i dont ...if you can recommend me a program other than camtasia, where ps performance doesnt get affected i would do one sometime :D
01-17-2007, 09:01 AM
cool work man. i like your style and the mood of your paintings
01-17-2007, 09:32 AM
Yes, it's clear that colors are in your DNA! But...wow...only 30 minutes ! O_O
michael: thx :)
"hero" from the dsg... i might finish this someday:

aldog: so far i dont ...if you can recommend me a program other than camtasia, where ps performance doesnt get affected i would do one sometime :DIt's now my goal to find you something. I'll check back when I do =D
aldog: oh-OH :scream:
from the dsg:
01-19-2007, 06:12 AM
Beautiful and beautiful.
My eye has got a fugue on the left border but subjects are interesting and colors, as usual, very harmonic.
01-20-2007, 03:30 PM
aldog: oh-OH :scream:haha.
I found one, called "Super Screen Capture". It works pretty well, I didn't get any lag doing some brushstrokes.
Here it is
It costs 10$ I think.
and I don't know how you feel about warez, so I'll just let you PM me the answer to that
01-21-2007, 12:05 AM
Vahn - love where you are going with your illustrations!
You are really developing a distinct style with the brushes and textures you are using.
Keep up the good work!
serena: thank you.. i agree with the left side ..it sucks! But i didnt have the patience to correct it
aldog: i tried the free version, but it really does affect ps performance .. maybe my pc just isnt good enough ...but i'd really need something u dont even feel while painting :) if it isnt fast enough i cant let loose hehe
redfrog: hehe thank you  i dont really know where i am really going, but i do enjoy all positive feedback, that much i know :)
01-21-2007, 08:33 AM
well...any new pic???:bounce:
here serena :)
01-21-2007, 11:24 PM
Well, man...no way...it's FREEEESHH puuuree FRESHNESS !
It's a strong sensation that I've got with all your pics.
By the way, I think you should organize all these beutiful works in a book or something similar.
from the dsg:
i updated link a little.
heres the first sketch:
and here the update:
i dont know if i like it yet...its getting more serious now hmmm
01-24-2007, 01:10 PM
Vahn - I love the dynamic of the new Link version.
Has a lot more energy to it!
The only thing i would say though is the silhouette loses a little especially around the shield arm. Not really a big issue tho - i think the pic is fantastic!
01-24-2007, 03:25 PM
I just come here and I really blown away by your art. From
all the art, I really love the second one. It got the magic aura surrounding the image
and I believe the one factor that contribute it is the powerful background.
it really works.
For the last picture, the character in green-suit is a little bit out of proportion.
The legs seems too big for the body.
Anyway, overall, you rocks!!
01-24-2007, 08:54 PM
aldog: i tried the free version, but it really does affect ps performance .. maybe my pc just isnt good enough ...but i'd really need something u dont even feel while painting :) if it isnt fast enough i cant let loose heheCompletely understand. My computer's obviously built a bit different than yours and I didn't even stop to think about that. I'll just keep on my search and test them on my other computer.
redfrog: yeah that bothered me as well..but there still a lot to improve so well see what the future holds for the shield :)
vrempire: thank you :D :D yeah i know about the legs ..i'll try to balance the whole thing some more..the arms still have to be done as well...
aldog: hehe yeah maybe ...i got 1 gig ram and a p4 3ghz but its time for a new one this year :)
tonights silly sketch: "girlpower" (dsg)
01-27-2007, 12:32 AM
wow, lots and lots of beautiful sketches Vahn
aldog: hehe yeah maybe ...i got 1 gig ram and a p4 3ghz but its time for a new one this year :)
dang, too bad I don't live closer I would buy that from you in a heart beat, I dont' even wanna say what I work on lol
01-28-2007, 10:55 AM
I am most definitely a fan of your style, and i just have to ask:
"What is the significance of the chickens?"
Love em - they crack me up!
ivy: come over ill keep it for you :)
redfrog: hehe well... in zelda Link grabs chickens, jumps off a cliff and then sails around in the air. And some girls i know...well..ermm...when they gather in our kitchen its a bit like in a hen-coop :)
does anyone have zhuzhu's brush presets ? id need them but the link in his watercolor tutorial is not working anymore. If anyone still has the abr. file plz send it to me ( email@example.com ) :D
01-29-2007, 10:47 AM
You have some really nice sketches here. The girlpower one rocks!
About Zhuzhu's brushes, are you trying to download from here (http://www.5d.cn/bbs/uploadFiles/20...9_1479280_2.rar) ? Because it seems to work for me...If you still can't get it, I'll send you an email :) It's not an .abr file though, the format is .tpl
i asked my good friend hanna what to draw and she described me a creature and how exactly it should look like. So heres a first WIP:

heres the next wip ... a color test, i dont really like. I tried to balance the creature some more but didnt really succeed ..next udate soon:
02-05-2007, 07:33 PM
Hey Vahn, I found another one if you're willing to give it a try
02-06-2007, 07:44 PM
hey Vahn im just dropping by to say that i like how the creature is progressing, should try that too maybe my little sister would describe me something awsome and i would try to execute....could be the next big wave....
I like how it cuddles my seeing nerve, sine its not expected sight or view on that pic...anyways it bretty nice and imaginative....and designing process is helping it too...:scream:
02-06-2007, 08:15 PM
Wow, I love that creature.
Somehow the whitish blue brushings on the bottom left draw me out of the picture though.
02-07-2007, 03:21 PM
good work in here Vahn.
weiter so
02-08-2007, 01:48 AM
Wooohooo,I subscribe here!!So much excellent stuff in here, congratz Vahn!

02-10-2007, 05:51 PM
yay! aldog finally got a good one. woohoo
Occasionally i continue with practicing corel painter. Its still a struggle tough :(
heres a ps | painter sketch from the dsg "white knight" :
another painter sketch finished in ps :
"caveman" from the dsg:
again painter | ps
i did a series of 6 illustration for school. they go together with old romantic german poems about nature & traveling:
02-19-2007, 04:28 PM
By any chance do you have the titles of the poems? Love the caveman, so funny! Your art is really great, you have a way with lighting and colors that amazes me, great thread!
02-19-2007, 05:37 PM
The sequential one is great. The fact you were inspired by an old poem and gave it a modern interpretation is very compelling
heres a face study from ref. done in painter, oversharpened in ps.. i will update this
Zyrinx: thx man, the poems are all by Joseph von Eichendorff. One is called "Mondnacht" and the rest I used are just small passages out of his other poems.
dh: hehe .. yeah the idea behind it is to have the same themes in the poems and the pictures but a strong contrast at the same time: the poems are very harmonic/idyllic/calm and i wanted to counter that with the illustrations.
02-20-2007, 11:42 AM
vahn, the sequentials are sweet. quite a juxtaposition to romantic poems about travel ;)
also like the studies. good stuff!
thx jp :)
heres a little update on the girl:
02-21-2007, 07:48 AM
Really like the stuff you are doing in painter Vahn.
I think your style makes a fantastic transition into painter.
Oh and by the way, that caveman is priceless! :)
thank you rf :D
I started a new one .. heres wip1 where i laid down basic shape, colors & shadow:
02-21-2007, 10:39 AM
I just noticed I never reply here before but I have looked at this thread many times in awe :(
The portrait is very different to your usual work. I just thought maybe if you drop a soft light layer on top and add warmer hues here and there it will look more life like but still keeps your brush style.
Keep up the good work.
mhhm i tried but couldnt get it right ... would you mind doing an overpaint with some colors of your choice ? :)
02-21-2007, 11:22 AM
I just picked a color off the orange part of the hair and went with it with light strokes to keep it transparent to build up on it.
I actually did a paintover earlier and went overboard.
I'll show both.
And me bored and curious and carried away.
hehe thank you linda :D
I printed it out and it got a touch of more red in it ..that looks really good actually. Youre right, that its overall a bit too cool, wich makes her look a bit dead...but maybe i like that too :)
did you ever try corel painter ? I think you would really like it :)
I got the demo version of painterX and the realbristle brushes are fun to paint with
02-21-2007, 12:54 PM
I tried 6, 8 and 9 and I didn't love it.
Might try 10. I read people raving about it on CA.
It's cool if you like her to look dead as well. *sniff :( no printer/scanner to check stuff.
You wanted a crime scene look or someone overdosed on drugs?
mhhm im not sure linda .. more like the "she-died-instantly-with-the-camera-flash" look :D
heres a little update on the new one:
a hangover doodle:

02-24-2007, 03:32 PM
Just stopping by to say that I like your work. Actually, I decided to make my Sketch thread when I saw yours :buttrock: . So thanks for sharing your work, keep it up !
02-24-2007, 03:47 PM
The painting of the red haired girl (third image above) is excellent. Nice cropping too
kaladen:  :D
dh: thanks m8
Im going to Budapest to visit my grandparents, so no updates here for a month.
03-01-2007, 10:32 AM
I love this stroke-effect you are using.
It' SO painterly.
thx serena :)
04-03-2007, 01:15 AM
wooo kickass vahn! reminds me of some über stylish comic-book art (and the yellow is great :))
04-03-2007, 03:37 AM
Some incredible work, here, man. Keep it up.
There so many people striving for a certain style.
In my opinion it always was your strong characteristic trait that you achieved a unique recognizable style without sacrificing the image you are painting to it.
What are you planning to do after studying? Just interested where I am going to see that style in practice someday.
audit, viking : thx
Mu: thank you. I cant really say that i have a style yet..im still learning and exploring. Mhhm and after school ....i dont really know yet..something with Illustration :D
04-03-2007, 11:25 PM
Your thread is full of ideas and fun practises, it's very fresh!
thank you arnocob :D

cheers serena :)
heres my entry for ca's chow...not really satisfied but i think i will finish it someday:
04-08-2007, 11:50 PM
stopped in for a little peek , great new stuff since my last visit Vahn :)
04-11-2007, 10:24 AM
There's something in your way to apply colors that enchantes me. So...mm.. balanced...with interaction and dynamism....it's beautiful.
linda, serena : thanks
heres some Akira Fan Art:
there'll be more ..i decided to do a little series of my favorite shots from one of the best comics ever created :D
04-20-2007, 12:45 AM

Cool thread, keep up the good work!
04-20-2007, 07:47 AM

i got some more books now ( im trying to collect the colored editions ) and i cant praise it enough...its one of the best comics i have ever read :D
i will do some more soon...but first i have to do a lot of Illustrations for school so i dont know when i can continue with my Akira Fanproject
04-21-2007, 08:27 AM
that coloring style is really great. nice painterly feel and cool textures on the walls. i havent seen the colored akira book yet, hope it's as nice as that ;)
thx jpedro ..yeah you should check them out if you can get some :)

It's been a long time, The Akira fan art are awesome !
thx kaladen :)
here is a possible version of the very first panel of a comic i am working on :
07-09-2007, 05:45 AM
great collection - epic imagination and great energy
I want to work to realise sketches like you! keep it up!
here are roughs of the pages of my school project, how i presented it at the end of the term
the theme was fear
I printed these pages in a book again and again ...always the same 12 pages. So far its more conceptual art than a comic. I wanted to represent a never ending circle of everyday crime that happens to my protagonist over and over again. Its always the same day that repeats ..like a broken record..kinda like the movie Groundhog Day.
just imagine it as a loop :)
and so on.....
I have to let this rest for now..but eventually i will come back to it and refine all the panels and make a colored version too.......someday....
Any crits and comments would be very cool
07-27-2007, 02:44 AM
About that poet from page 4 of your thread. It looks like he's really pouring his heart into his writing. I'm nearly inclined to think that this is dark art. Well, at least the art is scarier when listening to creepy music with evil whispering voices in the background. It suits the theme real well...
thx chrizimer ..hehe my professor hated that one :D
07-27-2007, 09:11 AM
very good shots and angles you chose, i particularly enjoy the cityscape shots and dark street corners. nice mood and atmosphere, really well done.
08-02-2007, 04:18 PM
very cool stuff in here :) the storyboards are great.
i think i'll have to check back later to read the whole thread.
i got a new pc now, moved to a new flat and ordered internet. Soon ill be posting again ...
i have a question:
Anyone here from Berlin who knows where to buy englisch pc games here in the city ? its impossible to find any clues on the web...
hope someone reads this hehe :D
02-29-2008, 01:52 PM
Great stuff, those exotic birds are terrific. I love the dry brush effect. Plus, the asian girl on the previous page is stunning
03-02-2008, 09:38 PM
Gorgeous-looking textures in the bird pictures. Great mood, too.
dh: thx man .. i can recommend the movie that girl is from. Its called "Samurai Fiction" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0170544/)
eilidh: thank you :)
b/w speed with ref from Hot fuzz :
I had to do some pixel art for class. Well i always wanted to have a big roman orgy poster :D

stone cold ninja
09-10-2008, 06:37 PM
Are you doing a tribute to Pokemon?
Seriously, I think the animal stuff is fantastic, and I love your painting method of mixing loose and tight, hard and soft together. It creates a mood of spontaneity and life but is also very descriptive and specific. Thumbs up.
Lots of eyecandy!
Love the child's expression... kinda like the kid is thinking "is this gonna take much longer... coz I got some more important things to do" :)
Killer update
nr43: thanks :D
ninja: thx hehe no not really pokemon. I like the strokes in the bird too ..sometimes it just happens without much effort and sometimes i struggle and its shit like this airship:
rock paper scissors:
a friend wanted me to paint a junkyard monster..well heres my first try:
