Definitely subscribing. I like the boldness of your style and your use of colour and texture (it was a couple of sketches for the DSG that had drawn my attention already).
It would be nice to see a few brief comments from you along with each image, by the way. :)
danielh68: yeah your great collection kinda pushed me over the edge to make one myself :D
eilidh: Ill write some comments in the future ...but just for you :)
just did this for the birthday of a friend. His nickname is "turtle" :)

Vahn,
Really like your 2nd sketch in particular ~ I think you're definitely improving! The thing I like about your work is the humor ~ glad to see that's still intact! :)
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
good stuff Vahn i really like your texturing, your style reminds me of Ralph Steadman raw and fun

I've always been envious of people who can throw such awesome textures into a sketch, and make something like this really fast. I like the second one the most, good stuff, keep it up.
Love the second sketch and the turtle looks cool too!
You have a very unique style, very good use of your palet..
I'll be lurking here for more!
Rebecca: thank you
xott: hehe ty :D
srsizzy: thx ... I just cant work slow, what isnt good sometimes :(
MVDB: ahh its you ... u got a new nick :) thx m8
here a sketch from todays dsg. I like the bg but the characters are bad. They arent painted well and oversharpened

Vahn, it's great to see you doing a sketch book! Bout time. I love the turtle for your firend, cracks me up. As far as the treasure hunter goes, I think the sharpness and painting on the characters are fine, just the composition is a little confusing to the eye. Love the background too

that last one's great.
dunno if it was meant to be funny, cause after looking at it for a second it seems like a sad scene
but it just makes me giggle
eilidh
07-20-2006, 11:28 AM
Like this last one! The background is great -- what I love most is the reflections at the front, so minimally put together, and so effectively.
I wouldn't have thought the characters were oversharpened had you not mentioned it. Do you actually use the sharpen tool? It almost seems that way. I happen to like the effect, though.

It's great seeing you work on some landscapes and backgrounds, Vahn, they've all got a lot of energy and a wonderful sense of light and atmosphere. Keep working on those... and maybe think about combining backgrounds with your characters! All of your character images use rather simple backdrops, so how about trying to incorporate some more characters into scenes. (You tried it in that one beach pic, but as you noted, the characters might be a bit oversharpened.) :)
But anyhow, love the work so far...

So is that Charles Baudelaire or Poe?
hehe dh, no ist a romantic german poet called joseph v. eichendorff :argh:
i have to do the whole thing in 2 colors only and simplify some more. Also i have to get rid of the quill and find some modern metaphor for the poet. Ill post a new version soon :)

Vahn - I love the dynamic of the new Link version.
Has a lot more energy to it!
The only thing i would say though is the silhouette loses a little especially around the shield arm. Not really a big issue tho - i think the pic is fantastic!

01-24-2007, 04:25 PM
Hi Vahn,
I just come here and I really blown away by your art. From
all the art, I really love the second one. It got the magic aura surrounding the image
and I believe the one factor that contribute it is the powerful background.
it really works.
For the last picture, the character in green-suit is a little bit out of proportion.
The legs seems too big for the body.
Anyway, overall, you rocks!!
:D

aldog: i tried the free version, but it really does affect ps performance .. maybe my pc just isnt good enough ...but i'd really need something u dont even feel while painting :) if it isnt fast enough i cant let loose heheCompletely understand. My computer's obviously built a bit different than yours and I didn't even stop to think about that. I'll just keep on my search and test them on my other computer.
*crosses fingers*
redfrog: yeah that bothered me as well..but there still a lot to improve so well see what the future holds for the shield :)
vrempire: thank you :D :D yeah i know about the legs ..i'll try to balance the whole thing some more..the arms still have to be done as well...

Love em - they crack me up!
ivy: come over ill keep it for you :)

About Zhuzhu's brushes, are you trying to download from here (http://www.5d.cn/bbs/uploadFiles/20...9_1479280_2.rar) ? Because it seems to work for me...If you still can't get it, I'll send you an email :) It's not an .abr file though, the format is .tpl

The sequential one is great. The fact you were inspired by an old poem and gave it a modern interpretation is very compelling
heres a face study from ref. done in painter, oversharpened in ps.. i will update this
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b120/Vahnin/H1.jpg
Zyrinx: thx man, the poems are all by Joseph von Eichendorff. One is called "Mondnacht" and the rest I used are just small passages out of his other poems.
dh: hehe .. yeah the idea behind it is to have the same themes in the poems and the pictures but a strong contrast at the same time: the poems are very harmonic/idyllic/calm and i wanted to counter that with the illustrations.
jpedro
02-20-2007, 12:42 PM

I just noticed I never reply here before but I have looked at this thread many times in awe :(
The portrait is very different to your usual work. I just thought maybe if you drop a soft light layer on top and add warmer hues here and there it will look more life like but still keeps your brush style.
Keep up the good work.
mhhm i tried but couldnt get it right ... would you mind doing an overpaint with some colors of your choice ? :)

I tried 6, 8 and 9 and I didn't love it.
Might try 10. I read people raving about it on CA.
It's cool if you like her to look dead as well. *sniff :( no printer/scanner to check stuff.
You wanted a crime scene look or someone overdosed on drugs?
mhhm im not sure linda .. more like the "she-died-instantly-with-the-camera-flash" look :D

Some incredible work, here, man. Keep it up.
There so many people striving for a certain style.
In my opinion it always was your strong characteristic trait that you achieved a unique recognizable style without sacrificing the image you are painting to it.
What are you planning to do after studying? Just interested where I am going to see that style in practice someday.
audit, viking : thx
Mu: thank you. I cant really say that i have a style yet..im still learning and exploring. Mhhm and after school ....i dont really know yet..something with Illustration :D

wow Vahn!
great collection - epic imagination and great energy
I want to work to realise sketches like you! keep it up!
here are roughs of the pages of my school project, how i presented it at the end of the term
the theme was fear
I printed these pages in a book again and again ...always the same 12 pages. So far its more conceptual art than a comic. I wanted to represent a never ending circle of everyday crime that happens to my protagonist over and over again. Its always the same day that repeats ..like a broken record..kinda like the movie Groundhog Day.
just imagine it as a loop :)

and so on.....
I have to let this rest for now..but eventually i will come back to it and refine all the panels and make a colored version too.......someday....
:D
Any crits and comments would be very cool

About that poet from page 4 of your thread. It looks like he's really pouring his heart into his writing. I'm nearly inclined to think that this is dark art. Well, at least the art is scarier when listening to creepy music with evil whispering voices in the background. It suits the theme real well...
thx chrizimer ..hehe my professor hated that one :D

Are you doing a tribute to Pokemon?
Seriously, I think the animal stuff is fantastic, and I love your painting method of mixing loose and tight, hard and soft together. It creates a mood of spontaneity and life but is also very descriptive and specific. Thumbs up.
Holy mother!
Lots of eyecandy!
Love the child's expression... kinda like the kid is thinking "is this gonna take much longer... coz I got some more important things to do" :)
Killer update
