Title: Miniature Pixel Portraits
Name: Andrea Fryer
Country: Finland
Software: Photoshop
During my most passionate Ultima Online years, I "painted portraits" of the locals of Britannia for a fee of 500 000 gold coins each. These images would be comminly be used as avatar images in UO forums and boards by their owners.
Much more information on these portraits can be found here, where you can see the 1-2-3 phases of how they were created, and what inspired the people to turn out looking this way:

Pixel art! And very well done, too. I'm impressed with your skin tones. They don't look one bit flat -- that is, there are different shades in different parts of the faces -- which must have been pretty tricky to do pixel by pixel.
By the way, how long does it take on average to make on of these? I always thought pixel painting is a very time-consuming process.

Anything of this quality with so much pixel economy has to be good! :D

That's some truely great pixelart. They're all briming over with character but my favourite has to be Emma, who you've managed to give a perfectly rendered look of disgust! Definitely not your typical Swords & Sorcery babe.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments :-). Had a look at people's work and was very impressed, so all the more flattering to receive a word or two from you. Will have to really look into all the awesome works here at CG Society and comment as well when I get some time.
eilidh: Yeah I do try to get some variation in skin tones, where it would be natural, such as different toned lights illuminating onto the face, or the way in which the nose, cheeks and chin are slightly redder etc. With these portraits though, the first work was done using a paintbrush and smudging and that's when I worked in the colors. It's the last phases where I go over the whole thing pixel by pixel and make small details, highlights, holes, pimples, hair etc. So no, these have not been created pixel by pixel from scratch although the last phase demands this kind of work due to the small size. At that size the RGB of one single pixel can determine the shape of a nose, the expression in an eye, and whether or not a hair falls naturally or not. On average these take about 6 hours to make each
Raisuly: Oh Deluxe paint! I started digital graphics on that software, but mine was for DOS in the PC :), way back in 1992. Deluxe paint was awesome! Nice to see a fellow Ultima fan *smiles warmly*.
erilaz: *grins* Yes, creating anything at this size is challenging indeed :-). My day time work (2D game artist for mobile phones) is all about creating even tinier graphics. Like for instance a fully clothed girl playing golf at the height of 15 pixels :-D. It gets pretty crazy at that size.
enialadam: Thank you :-)
ElFuego: Oi another person from Finland. *tervehtii* I see you are in the game business as well. Very cool, perhaps some day we'll meet at a Finnish IGDA meeting, although it is a tad long of a trip for you to come from Rovaniemi. ;-) And yes, pixel art is enchanting to both make and appreciate.
BlackLight: Thanks :). Yeah a lot of people say the same thing, and favor Emma over the others as well. Indeed, Emma the roleplayer in Ultima Online was special as well. A completely unique little lady who would go from town to town and disgust people with her horrible habits, such as picking her nose and squeezing her pimples. She was very funny and the player behind her, a masterful roleplayer.
