View Full Version : Races Of Middle Earth - character - Mentat7

This is my initial concept for this challenge. In the common tongue it is called a Horngrym. I will have a full history for it shortly as soon as I finish pulling all the resource material together. I will be doing this character completely in ZBrush. Happy Viewing.

EDIT:

The background is now complete:

And in the north Melkor built his strength, and he slept not, but watched, and laboured; and the evil things that he had perverted walked abroad, and the dark and slumbering woods were haunted by monsters and shapes of dread. And in Utumno he gathered his demons about him, those spirits who first adhered to him in the days of his splendour, and became most like him in his corruption; their hearts were of fire, but they were cloaked in darkness, and terror went before them; they had whips of flame. Balrogs they were named in Middle-earth in later days. And in that dark time Melkor bred many other monsters of diverse shapes and kinds that long troubled the world; and his realm spread now ever southward over Middle-earth.

Of the Maiar that aligned with him in the beginning Melkor did twist and pervert and when he had finished his foul task they were not of wholesome or recognizable form. From these the Gondraukar came, the Stone Demons. Formed with evil and malice in mind they had but one purpose; to thwart the machinations and planning of Aulė. For in all times that had passed and were to come Melkor did abide a great and terrible hatred of Aulė. The Horngrym as they were later named in the common tongue sought out the works of the Valar whose love was of crafting and stone and whose greatest love, the Dwarves, were of his own making. Thus the Horngrym sought out the Dwarven fathers and their peoples and forever hindered them.

The Horngrym stand nearly ten feet tall. Their bodies are as the strongest stone. They possess a mighty strength that can easily rend the strongest of Dwarven stone construction. And they pass through mountains of rock as if a fish swimming through water. They are sightless depending entirely upon a keen sense of hearing and an ability to feel the slightest vibrations emitting from rock. Such is their might that even the Storm Giants will not willingly cross their path. Yet the Horngrym do not feed upon flesh. What sustenance maintains their vitality can only be guessed at although it is known they have a proclivity for collecting gems of all sorts. Horngrym will go out of their way to waylay a Dwarven community.

Hi Mentat, glad to see you in this challenge!
I can't wait to see your zbrush model.

See you soon.

I had two choices of mesh types to use....an Adaptive low poly mesh or a Unified high poly mesh. I chose the Unified mesh because ultimately this will be a still shot and I am not of a mind to animate or bone the character in any way. The Unified mesh gives me better tactile feel as well as I model the body. It is able to hold much finer detail although similar results could be accomplished with an Adaptive mesh through dividing various areas that require higher detail.

The first three steps:

The final step, is actually the same figure with a front and back shot.

Looking cool so far, although some of your muscles structure (especially the torso muscles) are still a little to boxy).
Otherwise, coming along well! :)

Thanks Leigh. Can you umm tell me what you mean by boxy? I don't follow. Thanks again.

By boxy, I mean that they are not looking properly formed yet. They are a little too square - not quite natural/organic yet :)

Mentat, I have to tell you that this is a wonderfully modeled piece. You always show a great flare in your visions and this is no exception. I dont understand what boxy meant as mentioned by one of the other comments made but I can assure you that this is one very realistic and nicely 3d modelled. Definitely a Mentat original....I love the background techniques used as well. top notch stuff . I can't think of much Iwould change if it were my own that would be worth mentioning. Good luck on this challenge, though it's quite obvious that luck was not involved only skill and a great artistic ability and imagination.:applause:

I agree Mentat7, it would be a waste to take to heart the weird ramblings of an obviously pychologically-problem-riddled and EXTREMELY immature person.

He is the one with a problem, not you. It is a shame that you are letting his pathetic little attempts at disrupting your thread get to you, since by doing so you are giving him his hollow little victory. Anyway, you are an adult - why should you care what some kid thinks? I am presuming this guy is about 14-16 years old, judging by his comments.

Please don't abandon your online work - it would be a terrible loss.

Hey Mentat7,
Regardless of what happened before somewhere else, you've learned from it and moved on. This person is hitting you with mud in the back! :shame:

We have no issues with you as this individual does, it seems. I see only one person out of place and its not you. You could prove differently if you choose to by your actions in the future but until then, keep rolling! I use Lightwave myself but I do enjoy seeing work produced in ZBrush and look forward to following your thread. :bounce:

Its obvious this individual joined solely for the reason of posting the "nah-nah" threads that belong on a school yard. :shame:

Cowboy-Up brother and keep on keeping on!

Take care man either way...

Here is the first working render. I still have work to do on it particularly in the feet and hands and some on the stomach. I have a few more details that I am experimenting with also. Not sure about the background.

Hi Mentat,

Good progression on the piece. Ignore the children and stay online buddy.

I agree with Leighs comments about the boxyness (if that is the right word) It is a problem I find creeps into my own ZSpere images a lot. I often find that I make my muscles too big and bunchy because of the way I model in Z without a background template.
With poly modeling (edge loops etc.) I find I can get crisp edges and I want to repeat these in my ZBrush works. One way I suppose is to paint my depth on after, veins, ridges, knobbles etc..the things that would be added with textures in the average 3D package.

Anyhoo...don't you dare go away without saying goodbye. In fact. Don't go.

Glen

I continue to experiment with the textures...I am finding as my texture evolves it is affecting the detail of the mesh. I think this is good because I now can see where I need to focus my attention and fix the problems. New spikes on this one. I rather like the look of the texture but it still needs some work. Again I am uncertain of the background. Expect more updates.

Thank you one and all for your kind comments and support in helping me finish this.

what technique do you use for texturing?? are these procedural textures or painted images? please show me how you got that effect...

keep it up!

Mentat7
01-21-2003, 11:12 PM
Thanks CGeye. All of this was done in ZBrush. Are you familiar with that program? There are three elements playing into the texture right now. First is the basic procedural material. Second is a painted texture. And third is an application of 2.5D brushes within zbrush (this is what was used to create the rocky bumpy skin). My goal it to get most of it incorporated into the material and texture and then rely on the 2.5D tools sparingly. Cheers!

Thanks everyone. Your words of encouragement really make a difference.

3ddy: Thank you

CGEye: Non-stop banners.....lol It does have a learning curve but I find it more intuitive than traditional apps. I am still trying to wrap my little noggin around C4D for example.

InnerVortex: Thanks

Fetus: Thank you. Zbrush does have it's own mapping program in a manner of speaking. TextureMaster is a zscript utility that comes with ZBrush. It utilizes a built in command called 3D Copy to transfer textures to the UV Map. ZB has several mapping modes: Cylindrical, Planar, Spherical, UVTile, UVTiles, and will soon (with the release of 1.6) have an enhanced UVTiles mapping that can take into account polygon sizes in relation to one another...ie it can determine the relation in surface area between polys and assign the tiles in a more appropriate manner thus mainting a higher quality in the image map when it is transfered to the object.

mdme_sadie: lol...you just go ahead and wander around all you want. ;) Thanks
