View Full Version : Lightsaber test (DV)
FerdiWillemse 01-18-2003, 02:07 PM Hey all.
I had some spare time and tried to get my own lightsiber effect. Soon I'll do a >very< little fighting sequence with somebody else.
Any C&C are welcome!

Thanks guys!
I did the lightsaber as followed:
I shot myself with a rubber pipe (i know :annoyed: but I didn't have anything solid around this place). I used the pipe as reference for the motion blur and for the direction .
After that I I broke my video into a TGA sequence and started painting my lightsaber frame by frame in photoshop using the reference of the rubber pipe.
I tried other ways before like motion tracking in after effect but the results never satisfied me. Thanks for your comments peeps!

Looks pretty good. The tip seems to be a bit flat though.
Try this (http://www.bluetemptation.com/lia/index.html)

Trommeldaris: I'll show you how in a few minutes
KOBALT_KORE: I am insane:bounce:
nervous twitch: Nice, I've tried it, but it's too much work for an animation. And I think I can controle the lightsaber better my way. Thanks anyway ;)

NemesisFin: No I didn't? I looked for it but can't find it... Do you have a specific adress?

How to:
1) Select the region where the motion blur is.
Make a new layer called 'lightsaber'. Give your selection a feather depending on the amount of blur.
2) Fill the selection with a white color.
3) Give it a glow like I did.
4) The result :)
I hope it helps you, oh and sorry for the compression quality.

Hi !
An easy and faster method is to rotoscope the motion of the lightsaber in a compositing application like AfterEffects.
We did it at school and it's very fast and you get astounding results.

cool! looks good i did a project a year ago and we did a fight to illustrate various special effects and i drew them on frame by fram and i like the effect theres a slight flicker and it looks nicer in my opinion btw 1000 frames each containing 3 blades i hand drew over 3000 blades took me awhile!

Hey guys, thanks again for your comments!
I've tried rotoscoping, tracking and many other things before with rather dissapointing results. That's why I gave it a try - the hard way.
I still think frame by frame is the best way, also to get the motion blur look like the 'real ones'.
I found someone who to volunteer have a lightsaber dual with me, so that's going to be fun :)
