View Full Version : RENDERERS, again...
Anton Andriesh 01-18-2003, 01:43 PM Here's the everlasting question: which renderer to choose? Brazil, fR, vRay, something else?
To be concrete, information that interrests me is about such bugs as Max's Light Tracer's Shadow Leaks.. is this problem peculiar to other renderers too? Are there other particular lacks in these renderers? Inconveniences?
Thank you! :)

I bought finalRender because of this:
fR stage-0 $695 (buy stage-0 and get FREE upgrade to stage-1)
vray $799
Brazil $1200
:D :D :D :p
check the fR demo movies (http://trinity3d.com/productinfo/siggraph2002/Sig_MovieGallery.shtml)

finalRender rules ! Just get the "old but good" Stage0 and then wait for Stage1
Kib
theres a discount on vray atm, think its under $700 now :D
or you could adapt my old headmasters principle of pirated software:
Try it.
See if it works the way you want (but dont make money with it)
If it does buy it.
if it dont: uninstall.
Its sort of like buying a car really. You would give it a spin before youd buy it.
If there is any demos/tryout versions get those instead of the pirated version.
I know this might be controversial but what i am advocating is not a "prolonged" piracy, only the trying before buying.
Personally though, if i had the money, brazil would be my renderer of choice. It seems very easy to work with (at least the betas were) but hey thats just my 2 cents....

Thank you! :) I started to use Brazil. I think it's the most optimal balance of quality/features/render speed..
Hope that such troubles like Shadow Leaks will not occur :)

That finalRender pricing that is quoted is only partially correct (see the notes below the following table.)
The following table contains information that was collected as of today (January 19th, 2003), but some information was not easy to find. Therefore please inquire with the actual developers to get accurate quotes.

¹ Newsletter reads 'valid till the end of the year [2002].' - however, website still indicates this price
² Note that the Brazil r/s Public Test (v0.4.53) is not representative of the full version of Brazil r/s any more than, say, V-Ray Free is representative of V-Ray Advanced. Both have a demo version of the full product available.
³ finalRender Stage-0 sells for €730 in Europe. Current exchange rate dictates this as $US778.91, or a ~+12.07% price difference. This excludes the 16% sales tax that also has to be applied, bringing the price up to $902.30, or a ~+29.83% price difference.
*
WS = workstation - a license which you can change settings and render with.
RN = rendernode - a license which you can only render with.
nCPU = license works on up to n CPUs - if absent, assume 'unlimited'.
~ = unlimited
** V-Ray Advanced's licensing model only applies to distributed rendering.
° Note that you'll also need a renderman hookup, such as MaxMan - this sells for $US990. Once you have a renderman hookup, you don't necessarily need to use Pixar's Renderman Artist Tools, of course - any renderman-compliant renderer will work.
^ I am not aware of whether this book includes a link to Mental Ray 2.1 from 3ds max or not.

If anybody wants to fill in the blanks up above and/or correct information, please do :)
