Dammit, I just don't get the spare time to do this anymore!
In my delay it seems that someone else came up with the
same idea as me - doing the elephant headed Indian god
Ganesh. I'm going to soldier on with him though.
Only had a few hours on him so far, decided to do him
very differently from the usual stylised depictions.
He's going to be very ornate, plenty of regal jewelry
and robes.

WoW! your Ganesha rockS! I like how you attached the second set of arms...
well, i looked and i looked, and the only thing i could find wrong with it is:
1: the trunk has a big hole in it.... but thats probably because you have not got to it yet!!!
2: there is bad AA....
Matt, any chance we could get some views of the control cage?? close ups of the main features... hands, shoulders..... feet.... etc?????

Excellent ! I made his little brother last month !
Hey Matt, i just checked your site, have not been there in a while.... and i must say, that is the FIRST time i have ever seen Nemesis in colour......... nice work on him... what about his other half, the leader of the ABC warriors, they are joined and one cannot die without the other (oh i hope i am remembering this correctly, its been a while since i read 2000AD).... so, how can one exist without the other...... model him, whats his name, is it Deadlock or something like that??

03-22-2002, 11:36 PM
Four Stars... Damn! This has to be the best one so far and he's only getting four stars.
Matt, great model, excellent. Really strong outlines, nice shape, good curves. But what makes this model great is the _idea_ , the theme if you will. While everyone else and their Grandma are creating 'generic demon number 124-b' you've made something that stands out. It looks like it has a personallity, substance.
So far the only model that makes me think 'damn, would I ever like to animate that sucka' :-)
Cheers.
Matt-Clark
03-23-2002, 06:22 AM
I've had my doubts about this model - I've not had the time I'd usually like to devote to it, and I've also felt it was below my usual par, but the response has been positive. (thanks ;) )
I knew from the second I saw the challange that most would opt for the the stereo-typical demon theme, and wanted to do something a little different. I'm not saying that the standard of the modelling has dropped, (in fact I'd say it's got much better since the first challenge) but people tend to go for tried and tested ideas.
'Gods and demons' is the theme and the temptation is to create demons because they are visually exciting, and appeal to the £D audience, but to do anything that stands out in this field I think you have to excel at what you're doing. The whole winged/hooved beast thing has been done to death in my opinion. Whats the harm in modeling a true god? Why all the negativity? There's a whole buch of visually interesting positive icons out there.
Ganesh(a) is my attempt at taking an existing deity and stamping my own style on his image in a way I've not seen before. He's no demon and so I'm not counting on him looking ferocious/exciting and winning that side of the audience. I just want him to look great and appeal to everyone in an original way.
Hopefully I'll get there....

Matt,
I agree with what your saying. Im really one to talk because my entry is what you would call "normal", but I still feel what your saying. I have noticed with the entries that most of the ideas are very similar. People seem to try to create something that looks "cool". I feel that the most sucessful models are the ones that are extremely creative. Have some sort of spin on them that completely catch you off guard. They can be humorous or even disturbing. I feel that the movie industry is a lot like that today. Most movies are copies of things that have "worked" (as in made a lot of money). Oh well.

Matt your obviously an extremely talented artist .... i too went for something more tranquil but my talent is nt nearly as great as yours so i get by on what ive got......not everyone has the ability to create amazing original designs and the title of gods and demons suggests youll get exactly that.......
JayDog
03-23-2002, 11:21 AM
Skunk,
Everyone may not have the ability to produce an amazing original design, but its nice to think outside the box sometimes. You can produce some pretty cool models with only a small understanding of a 3d program. Its all about how you go about doing it. I currently go to a traditional art school. There are artists here that are technically amazing, but it comes to a point when it becomes boring to see a perfectly rendered portrait. I've seen too many portraits before to get excited about it. You can make it interesting by putting some sort of spin on it. Rather than just a straight forward picture (model). I guess its just something to think about.

Man ya character has me blown away... Awesome, just awesome! Regarding the winged hoof thing, thats the road I took :( No matter its my first challenge n im tesing the waters I guess... But my character though a demon isnt necesarily evil, hopefully you see that in the final stage. Again though I cant praise yours enough, just awesome.

Love the new jewels ! That headress has tons of potential :) I kinda like the trunk the way it is; maybe a little bigger, but not much, makes him look more refined. Buda-ful :) (I know WRONG religon)
The cloth might use some folds of fat under it so it doesn't look like it will fall off :) (oooh a naked elephant, who would do such a thing :D)
see you,

Nice work Matt!
Ganesha - the Destroyer of Pride. I've always wanted to model this guy!
Being a freak for detail myself I would love to see you
add more of the subtleties that make Ganesh such an enigmatic Deity. His representation is laden with metaphor. You may or may not want to add this stuff or just continue on your own representation of him.
Consistent things you see in images of him:
Ganesh is usually represented with the broken tip of his right tusk in his lower right hand. It's a symbol of sacrifice, which he broke for writing the Mahabharata.
There's a rosary in his lower left hand which suggests the pursuit of knowledge.
In his upper right hand he has a Goad (axe/spear) which he uses to remove obstacles from mankinds way.
In his upper left he holds a noose which he uses to capture all difficulties.
He also often has a Laddoo (candy) in his trunk which indicates that one must discover the sweetness of Atman (the Soul)
He also has a snake around his waist which represents energy in all forms.
Of course all images of him vary a lot. But these might be of some inspiration.
Can't wait to see him finished.
The Commander
03-26-2002, 03:49 AM
Blimey that is gorgeous, the detail! Wow! I personaly feel that the arms and head could be bigger, but it looks fantastic regardless. I'm jealous :annoyed:.
What do you use to render by the way?
Matt-Clark
03-26-2002, 03:56 AM
Another View:
http://www.clarky85.freeserve.co.uk/ganesha22.jpg
There's lots that needs sorting out. The trunk is a bit of a hash a the moment. The creases are awfull and the shape and scale is a little off. There's some niggly things like clipping (where the head beads go through his head...) and the skinning on his arms is a little off, although I'll deal with that at the end.
He will have some more jewelry, in the shape of more bangles and arm bands. The crown will get more attention too.
One of the stories about Ganesha is where he fell off the back of his Rat (yes, he rides a rat.. I don't know how..) and being such a glut when he hit the floor his guts exploded all over the place. He carefully scraped them all up and put them back in, and then used a snake to tie his belly back up. So maybe we'll see a snake belt...
He's also supposed to be missing a tusk (more great stories for this one, including one version where he snapped it off to throw at the moon who had laughed at him spilling his guts.....)

Hi Matt i think that Axe is too small for this God Ganesh.
Matt-Clark
04-02-2002, 02:21 AM
I've been a bit crap at answering comments, so here I go:
puddlefish: There's some renders of the Nemesis model in the wallpaper section of the official 2000ad site (www.2000adonline.com) I found this old pic on my drive which shows the mesh, albeit unfinished here.
No plans to do any other 2000ad characters at the moment.
http://www.clarky85.freeserve.co.uk/nemwire.gif
BOROX: Most depictions show a small axe. It's symbolic, and not meant to be a huge weapon such as Thors axe. I considered doing something like that, but it wasn't really fitting with the character.
Jose: Yes I use Brazil. I know the blue GI thing has been done to death, but I still like it, and think it shows off untextured models great. Recently been using HDRI stuff too.
The Commander: Ear piercings are in!
Here's the latest update:
http://www.clarky85.freeserve.co.uk/elephant.jpg
There's no AA and the GI settings are low which is whats creating the artifacts.
Still have a few things to model and tweak.

Very nice model. All your work is very impressive. I was wondering why that last shot focuses on the lower body where the pants seem to cut through the belt. It seems like the belt just needs to be pulled out a bit. Was this done on purpose? Considering how meticulous the rest of the model is, this seemed very odd. Anyway, just a little nitpick question I guess.
I'd love to see some mocap thrown on this character, with a little flex on the fat :) Whenever I see a great model, I always want to see it move. Great stuff.
