All:

I've been in the industry for 6 years now (going on 7) and during that time, I've learned a lot of programming, shaders, texturing tools, and basically all the popular renderers. Ever since I laid eyes on Davy Jones in POTC2, I'm compelled to start a new interest. Texture painting!! I can ask several of my co-workers how to get started, but I also want some inputs from the viewers on this site. I'm going to go ahead with Photoshop, but I need to know what the best book/DVD is on beginners wanting to learn how to paint textures using Photoshop. Any good recommendations are welcome.

Thanks!

-M

People here are on their own schedules. I doubt you were being snubbed. While I'm just a "lowly" student, I can suggest at least one book that I have on order: ISBN: 0-7357-0918-1
Digital Texturing and Painting by Owen Demers. It's more theory than application. Once you have the theory down, the practical is relatively "easy".

If I can find another doc I have here somewhere, I can probably suggest another one or two. Also, take a look at the gnomon dvds.

If you have a tablet, Wacom has a seies of DVDs called Digital Navigator, and Digital Innovator.

I have the 3D Texture Painting with Dan Casey DVD and it's pretty good.

Damn, beat me to it. I scooped this one up most recently, and wish I had gotten it earlier. The guy just loves textures, and it shows in his book. I looked him (owen) up on IMDB and he's now the senior texture artist at some major studio, forgot which. Hope he posts here some day.

At any rate, welcome to the wonderful world of texture painting. I'm somewhat like you in that it wasn't my first specialty... I was originally a stronger modeler, texturing was on the side. But that's beginning to change.

One last note: You'll need a wacom for sure. Ditch the mouse as soon as possible.
