I'm trying the living city approach. I though that maybe a city could grow up around the discovery of a submerged UFO that may have crash landed. At first maybe the scientific community built a small station near the site and then a larger city grew up around that. I'd like to get crits on the basic idea and any composition problems there might be.

Thanks for the feedback! Here's another variation on the living city. This time it is more a straightforward city approach with one dominating structure.
Considering it is a matte painting is it ok to put in vehicles/ships?

Here's a more refined version of the same idea, I used max to play with the composition. This time I added the ruins of the old Atlantis on the left. Not sure if this is working yet, any crits or comments would be appreciated.

I tried to combine the best of two different sketches. There is something about the first sketch I liked but I needed to darken it and make it look more underwater by adding more blue haze. I left out the ruins of the Old Atlantis this time. I think the giant leg was too prominent in the previous sketch. Also I've cropped the top of the main structure, I think it's better. Please feel free to comment.

the second sketch definitly my favorite, it has a great sense of scale, that structure looks huge !! can wait to see a detailed mate painting , keep it up !

Here's another variation with more blue and now Atlantis is more subtle. I will probably end up splitting the difference between this and the last pic.

Thanks Valerion! I'm still trying to figure out the content of the composition. I feel like I can achieve better realism at this point with photographic elements. I've gone back to the idea of showing the old Atlantis in the foreground.

sean this is looking great ! the sense of scale is awesome, even tough I think you have your foreground and background too strong, I mean I think you need some middel ground elements , this is just my opinion, good luck ! this is going to be a great image

jamesvfx:thanks Jamesvfx. Yeah I agree about the lack of middleground. I decided to push forward anyway. I may be able to get something going in the middleground at the last minute.
MPavel:thanks, yeah it's more like "New Atlantis".

So here's the latest, just mixed a bunch of cities together. I may try to alter the buildings some more to make the shapes more unusual. I nixed the old ruins for now.

sean this is looking really awesome, just one tip for you, try to achieve a scpecific camera exposure for this, I mean maybe the black levels in the foreground should be way darker than the ones you have already , think a little bit like a cinematographer how would a real camera react to that light

So jamesvfx, I think I know what you mean. Do you mean just make the foreground darker overall ?
Anyway, here is an attempt to integrate the old ruins. I kind of like the idea that in the future pipe/cables were laid down right on top of an archaeologoic site as maybe that is more in keeping with the myth of Atlantis i.e the idea that the people were corrupt.
Any crits or comments welcome.

IŽd love to visit this city haha.Maybe IŽd add some lights on the ruins of the left and these red lights IŽd make smaller cause I think it makes the composition looks small,or increase the depth between the foreground and background:) Good luck to you!!

The lack of middleground ultimately was a problem I think so I've tried to give it more depth here. The composition looked unbalanced so I skewed the view. I've also tried to make the foregeound darker. I've added some bubbles and plankton type stuff. There would be allot of debris in the water.

one thing that bothers abit , the little red dots on the buildings, other then that great forced perspective, and good luck to you dude!:buttrock:
