View Full Version : .Obj Import Issues...
Keith Young 07-13-2006, 08:23 PM Hey folks...
I've been running some tests on various apps to see how robust thier Wavefront .obj import code is. If you're interested in following along (or want to send me results from other apps I haven't tested yet), take a look at the "Kamakazi Kube Project" article on my site (http://www.skinprops.com/frb_main.htm).
Cheers,
Keith

Cool - thanks. Could you just post the results here? I'm not sure that my contact link on that page is working.
Thanks,
Keith

Hi Keith,
great idea to have a test like that!
I am currently going through the test with messiah:Studio 2.2 and 2.4. For some reasons messiah cannot read any of the files that you provided with the test, am I doing something wrong ?
Other .obj files (like the n-gon sample that you provided with the Riptide plugin) read fine in messiah, though in general the .mtl file is ignored, i.e. the surfaces have different names, but the materials are all grey.

Hmmm... very strange. The only issue being tested in Kube1.obj is spaces in the material file name, and if it ignores those anyway, I can't think of why it would fail to load that one. Also, Kube4.obj only tests spaces in material names and usually when apps fail on that one, they just end up using the first word of the name, so it should be able to at least load that one as well.
I'm stumped. I don't have Messiah, so I can't try it myself. What happens when you try to import them?

BTW, I just updated the page...
** Updated 07.14.06 **
- There was an error in Kube6.obj (Non-Standard-Slashing (in facet records) test), where the Blue material was not being set on one of the faces. The links to the download file below have been updated to the new zip file. If you grabbed any of the earlier files, you should get the updated one. If you reported results to me yesterday, please re-check this test on those apps (I think Blender might be the only one in question). Thanks.

I gave it a closer look now. It seems to me that the comments (the lines starting with '#') give problems. Sometimes the comments are accepted, sometimes not. For instance, if I would delete (in a text editor) the first 5 lines of 'Kube1.obj', it would read fine. I couldn't figure out a pattern.
After deleting manually all comments, most objects show up fine in messiah (with the surfaces named correctly, but without the material properties). With 'Kube7', one side of the cube is missing.

That's just baffling :). Thanks for the report - I'll see if I can fit that into the results page.
