View Full Version : Anyone ever heard of 80dpi video?
tetsuo239 07-13-2006, 06:54 PM I recently completed a set of motion graphics for someone who's requested I deliver the composition in a couple different sizes. The larger size requested was 1280x720 at 80dpi.
I know of no way to adjust the dpi of my output in AfterEffects. On top of that, I've never even heard of 80dpi video. As far as I know, video systems don't really go by dpi as a video display doesn't really have a coherent understanding of "inches", they simply display images across the available pixels. Am I wrong about this?

No worry, you are completely right, videosignals don't have a resolution. The assumed resolution is always 72 dpi which is only relevant for the inner workings of a compositing app (sub-pixel calculations for motion interpolation, antialiasing etc. )but in the end it doesn't matter at all for the output. Maybe he has no understanding of the technical side and wanted to masquerade his ignorance with some important-sounding technobabble.

Mylenium is right and you to,
I think this guy who's requested the 80 dpi was working more with prints stuff and not with video
so don't worry you are completly right :)

Even that doesn't make sense because virtually all print work is done at 300dpi (or 150dpi for simple stuff). I agree with Mylenium, the guy probably wanted to sound knowledgeable.
