i just build my first max5 rig and did some test animations with it.
the character is not yet skinned right
also the char model is not mine... the credits go to François-Xavier Mélard.

the "skinned" one Ver. 1

only bones Ver. 1

"skinned" one Ver. 2

i really underestimated the power and time that is needed to skin such a character. i took some approaches but dont get any further.... so the mesh deformations is still shit.
are there any guidlines for skinning out there?
especially this character use some sort of clothes that dont bend in any direction. but the leather at the shoulder WOULD bend if penetrate enough by the arm. how to achive?
another big question for me is how to skin her (indeed very nice) butt?
if i use the upper legbone i get some strange deform when the leg is liftet to high above the ground.
should i implement some extra bones that keep the shape of the butt in place all the time??

thank you for your patience

looks good. can you post some stills of the model.
i think the sexy walk at the end might be a little to exaggerated at the end . but the rest is good

that run at the end is ridiculous and doesn't look right. The animation on the whole is not bad but she seems a little stiff in the legs.

Animation is good. Model is nicely done. Though the right hand looks weird. Like it has been twisted 360 degrees. Also it hasn't got a thumb. Atleast I can't see it and it seems that there isn't a place where it can be. During the animation when she sneaks around the corner her right hand goes through the wall. Her legs move very freaky. And if you are going for reality (I believe you are) in the moves then why doesn't her ponytail move?

Okay. Now I watched the animation about the fifth time and I noticed the thumb. It is in a very wrong place. And also, she twist her arm when she is going around the corner and it bends like it is made of paper. And the run at the end...

here is a new version of the sneaky elf...
i incorporated a pelvis bone and has a much better feeling regards the animation and the skinning of the pelvis area.
i put the pelvis bone to the center of gravity and used a orientation constrain for the first pine bone to get a bit motion into it when the pelvis is moving.
i attached a picture of the bone system, for comments.
also there are finally some hair bones (spline-ik)

with the skinning it seems that it simply need practice and experience. i have the feeling that the skin now much better follows the bones. i did not use angle deformers yet, but tested and found them very useful.
the butt is now hold in place thought the new pelvis bone.

on the animation side i tried to get the butt-swing a bit down (but not completely *g*)
and overworked the swing when she goes for the staff. hope this looks better now :)

thanks for your constructive critique guys...

reality? hmm... hard to say... she is definately not human and should not move exactly like a human.. therefor some strange movements :)
and finally the ponytrail does something usefully instead of sticking in the air :)
