Decent glass shader in Max 7

Well, if you're using Mental Ray, create a new mental ray advanced material and use the Glass (Lume) shader in the surface slot, a Shadow Transparency shader in the Shadow slot, and a Transmat Photon shader in the Photon slot.

I start with the standard raytraced glass that comes with Max. Then I start messing with it. I mess with reflection, environment, specularity and especially refraction. One major detail that makes your glass is lighting.
I also have this handy refractive index.

You've no doubt noticed that there are refractive indexes fir things that aren't transparent at all. But everything has a refractive index. I tend to make all my textures raytraced, and add the refractive index for whatever they may be. You'd be surprised.
